I've just read something in a book which has confused me a little :uhoh - hope someone can clarify...
regarding temporary work visas its says if you apply in the UK, with a job offer, before you arrive in NZ the work visa can last up to three years but if you apply in NZ the max. period is nine months.
I'm sure we were told by immigration people at the Expo that it was two years (if not three) if you applied once you arrived and found a job in NZ.
Then we were presuming that you have the duration of that visa to apply for permanent residency or sometimes get the work visa extended.
Anyone know? We're hoping to go out later this year and if its nine months that will be a big hiccup in our plans :(

Hi
I'm sure you are correct. I had to clarify with Immigration today, we are having are medicals done in NZ and lady at immigration advised you can apply for 1 or 2 yr permit for Work max 3 years but then the latter you would need to do police certs aswell. We're doing the same as you, getting WP for first 2 yrs and later applying for PR.
Not sure where 9 months has come from???
Hope this helps

It said nine months in a book I got from the library - Live & work in New Zealand it was published 2003 but I was worried I'd got the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the line.
Another thing we were told was that at the end of your 2yr temp. work visa you had to be on a minimum wage of $46,000 (I think that was the figure) to then be apply to apply for PR.

I'm trying to unravel it all as well.
It is easy to confuse temp work and work to residence.
The min wage is for work to residence.
With a temp work permit you can apply for pr via skilled migrant at the same time, which doesn't have a min wage either.

Thanks Alan - that does make it clearer :yes
We were under the belief that work to residence was basically same as a temp work visa but obviously not.
Might need to check our points again to see how we'd go on getting PR via skilled migrants! I thought it was getting clearer but I'm not so sure!
