So we expected no heating, that's no surprise. But we really want to get something set up before it actually gets cold!

Back in the UK we bought some lovely oil filled electric radiators from a company called Bisque. They were old style long, low ones. They plugged in (or could be hard-wired in), were reasonably efficient, and looked great. They also did super-contemporary ones. Much more permanent and elegant than those ugly wheely de Longhi things that you can't even sit on cos the fins are too spiky!

I've had a look around for something similar over here, but as yet no joy (there is a company called Bisque Radiators listed in the Yellow Pages - puts you through to Elegant Bathrooms in Auckland, but they haven't called me back yet).

I'm not going to bother with fitting proper central heating as the house has a fairly new regular water heater anyway, and we'll probably only stay a year or two in this house. It's not like the Kiwis see it as essential so we wouldn't break even on it I doubt!

Anyone found nice, attractive, permanent electric rads anywhere?

You're looking for a more permanent fixture such as the electric 'baseboard' heaters? They nearly circumference each room about 20cm off the floor. Though a common fitting i've seen back in Canada on older homes, i've only seen this style of heating in a few homes in NZ - all central - thermistatically controlled. This may offer a cheaper solution than to install oil filled electric heaters. Eitherway, all electric heaters are 100% efficient, it's how effective they are in dispersing the heat.

I had not heard of these before, Amazon is selling them, though the postage might be steep.

http://www.amazon.com/2545W-Qmark-Residential-Baseboard-Heater/dp/B000C4D8GW/sr=1-21/qid=1171533555/ref=sr_1_21/104-0278741-2915924?ie=UTF8&s=hi

A good idea for the future and relatively cheap.

Thanks for the tip - Super_BQ
