Hi everyone
Just wondered if anyone had help with their relocation costs from their employer when moving to NZ?
I'm thinking of mentioning it (perhaps) at the end of my interviews this week but unsure what response I'll get :uhoh .....the jobs are with District Health Boards, so not sure if they are even in a position to help out? I've heard of people in other professions being offered help with flights, rent, cars/fuel....does anyone here have any experience of this?
Many thanks,

hi my new employer (when we get there) has offerred me one free flight, 4 weeks accomodation and two weeks car hire. they way i see it if you dont ask you dont get. i imagine that most employers realise that we are alll very keen to get out there so have a good position when it comes to bargaining, that said they offered me 4 weeks accomodation or two weeks and 2 weeks car hire, i asked for both and got it.
mibne was with the council so i imagine health boards etc may bbe similar being another government body?
good luck with it all

The bank my OH was coming to for work on contract, just paid for a week in an apartment in Welly.
Other have had financial help and maybe more importantly to some, help finding searching out a rental, schools etc.

we had help with flights, shipping, visa and medical costs, 4 weeks accomodation and the use of a relocation consultant (who was rubbish)
in return i have to work for the company for 3 years or pay it back (proportionately depending on how much of the 3 years is still to run)
i'd love to say i negotiated heavily for that but its just what they offered

I know that teachers can get up to a 4000.00 relocation grant, but I'm not sure about other professions.
I would think that if you have the job "in the bag" before moving to NZ, you should feel OK to ask about some moving expense assistance. I would ask "if" there is anything they can do to help you out rather than indicate you expect it.

I've heard of two different government departments in Welly that have paid relocation costs. The level of position was fairly senior though, so that might have been part of it. When my OH intereviewed (didn't get the job though) they said that it was something they "factored in" for overseas candidates.
I agree with Christine, better to wait until they offer you the job before you bring that up.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'll go with the general consensus and wait to see if I get a job offer before mentioning anything. Fingers crossed!

I nearly took a job with a DHB and they said they would arrange everything about the journey and pay for it. Instead I took a job with the Minestry of Education, and they are paying for all the travel costs (1 way tickets from UK to NZ for family of 4), $3000 expenses, 2 weeks car hire and 2 weeks hotel costs. I didn't mention it at interview, but it was all typed up in my offer letter.

I have a job with the Local Council and was allowed to spend up to $10,000 to get our stuff over and three weeks in a hotel.

I think some employers are getting wary of offering relocation packages unless there is a clause just in case people end up coming over then either moving companies or going back to the uk - it could end up costing them loads.
We never asked for anything, but were met at the airport with a mobile phone, box of groceries, hire car and our motel was paid for. We also had time with a relocation expert, she was fantastic helping us find a rental and telling us the good areas, she has become a good friend too. Kev was also allowed two days when the container arrived as part of his relocation package. To be honest we were glad just to get the job offer from them, we couldn't have got here without it - so any extras we were given were a big bonus to us! :nice1

Yep I wondered that too, how long have you been at the council/Dunedin?

I have not been asked to; In all honesty when I started I was told that I would have to sign an bond which would be valid for three years, somebody in HR slipped up and never issued the bond. I checked with the union and they would not be able to claim anything back from me.

In my case no relocation package was offered, and it was a good thing as i never even took the job after meeting with them in Auckland 4 days after arriving. Once i realised Auckland wasn't for us i told a few white lies and did a............... :exit

What positions do people getting relocation assitance have? I am applying for social work positions with CYF and DHBs. Should I be asking for relocation help? It would be nice as the expenses are pilling high!

OH got job offer (in a construction company) & they paid for 1 week's car hire until we bought a car & 3 weeks in a motel until our rental was ready.
Friends of ours (similar line of work) got $10,000 but it was deducted from his first year's salary when he started work.
With regards to questions about what you should be asking for - give it a go - they can only say no at worst & at best they may give you something that you didn't expect - we asked & got the motel & car hire which we totally hadn't banked on & which was extremely helpful.
