Having a chat this morning, we mentioned about bringing wardrobes. We were told that most houses had walk in wardrobes.
Just wondering how many of you have walk in's, because we could save money and get something else instead.
Any help appreciated.

Every house I've ever lived in here in NZ has had built in wardrobes. They may not be more than a cupboard with a hanging rail (and usually a shelf) but they are built in. I know there are places that don't have them but they are few and far between.

No walk in wardrobes here but we live in a 35 year old house & they probably hadn't heard of walk-ins when they built it! We do have fitted wardrobes in 3 of the 4 bedrooms in our house & I personally wouldn't bother bringing wardrobes with you 99 times out of 100 the house has built in wardrobes in all bedrooms.

Guess we will spend our pennies on alternatives then :)
Got my eye on a lovely dining table/chairs in Ikea, guess that wins....

Oh yeah - Ikea now you're talking - fill all that wardrobe space in your container with Ikea stuff & you'll be happy when you get here!! :)

Agree with the others - only some of the old "villas" don't have built in wardrobes, but almost everything else does.
We brought over 3 big IKEA wardrobes with us, they sat in Crown pacakging for 14 months and then I sold 'em on TradeMe for $500! think that's more than I paid for them!

Just to be different, if there is any chance you will be living in a villa or heritage zone, then bring your wardrobes!
The majority of villas we viewed in Devonport had either 1 wardobe or none at all.
They are an absolute nightmare to buy here. We found one in Freedom Furniture in the end, not lovely but will do the job. But the bedroom department of a large Farmers Furniture store didn't have any, and they actually looked at me as though I was mad when I asked where their wardrobes were!
We did have 1 room with built in wardrobes, but none in the other 2 rooms. Often wardrobes don't take up as much space in the container as you think as they can be filled with duvets etc .
It can, however, always be risky to buy large items just to bring over as you don't know whether they will fit into your new place. Although like Matt many have made a profit on Trade Me selling on wardobes, beds and american fridge freezers etc
Use this link to check out prices of wardrobes over here:
www.freedomfurniture.co.nz/catalogue/index.html
or Trade Me (check out expired listings to see what they actually sell for):

there are places to buy nice furniture cheaply in NZ. for example on cuba st in wellington there is a place called hardings furniture. loads of bits and pieces and very cheap - but no pretty showroom or nice catalogues so you have to be prepared to go and have a bit of a hunt around.

Thanks for the info - now I have a dilemma again..... as we don't know where we are living or whatever, guess we'll just have to suck it and see!
Again, thanks, will have to speak to the boss when she gets up!!

I reckon if you have any nice ones, bring 'em, fill them up with the kids toys! But dont go buying any.... as they may well be a waste.
Was not an issue for us as all our houses in UK had built in ones, and so has this one here..

Sorry, I should have mentioned that these were for the kids rooms, not for us!
