To Bosch or not to Bosch!!!!

We have had Barry from John Mason round eyeing up all of our worldly goods, I said I wanted a new washing machine to bring over as I dont get along with my current one. He mentioned that the best model would be a Bosch as NZ are now using them and therefore easier to get parts should it break down. Also mentioned AEG or LG, can anyone over there confirm or deny? Im happy to get a new bosch before we depart.

Thanks y'all xx

Yep can get Bosch, LG and AEG here, no problems.

I'd go for a Bosch but it's worth waiting until you get out here. We bought our Bosh washing machine with us to find it didn't fit in the laundry. So ended up selling it on (might add for the same price we paid for it in the UK 2/3 years earlier :D ) We've now got a top loader, seems to be the kiwi choice. Have to say I haven't been disappointed.

Be aware though that some of the machines are really expensive, have a look at www.noelleeming.co.nz to get an idea.

Yes, you can get all those models over here, however if you are looking to buy a front loader they do cost more to buy here than in the UK. I was out looking to buy a new dryer and noticed that the front loading washing machines seemed to be in the region of $1,500 plus.

When we first arrived, I was using a top loader and I must say that it wasn't a cheap model, but somehow, it just didn't seem to get my clothes as clean as my front loader, but hey - that's just my opinion.

I was a happy girl when our container arrived and my hubby plumbed in my front loader........maybe its just a case of the 'devil you know' but I wouldn't swap it for a top loader.

I was in the same boat as you about washing machine, after researched both UK and NZ's washing machines via internet, in the end i opted for UK's bosch express 1400 as cheaper in UK ;) , looking back i made right choice for myself. I have tried using top loaders while waiting for my washing machine turn up, i didn't like it as doesn't wash my baby and boy's clothes' stains well and seem to wore the clothes out quicker (sorry to others who like top loaders!). My friends in UK had their bosch for over 10 years and other had it for years and *touch the wood* never broke down. I am now thinking about buying bosch dryer next so i can put on the top of washer (or other way around?) as there is kit for it.

Yep we bought a Bosch w/machine from Harvey Normans a couple of years back & ruddy expensive it was too - buy one in the UK & bring it over - I wish I'd had that advice - we spent $1200 on the cheapest Bosch model that would probably have been about £250 max in the UK!! Servicing probably won't cost that much.

I'm with Zardell on the front-loader opinion - I find top loaders, although you can get a huge wash in them just don't get rid of the stains so well as the old front loaders.

We had a good GE one at home that was identical to my cousins Bosch one just cost less. might be worth looking to see if the GE ones are still made by bosch (or the Bosch ones are made by GE)

To bring or not to bring..... we have an Ariston that is getting a bit long in the tooth now, but we are unsure if it is worth bringing it. May be worth just hammering it to death then getting a new one when it expires in (hopefully!) X years time. Looking at the cost of machines, it may be worth bringing it along.

We bought our 6 year old Bosch front loader with us and haven't regretted it for a second. My parents and my cousin have both recently replaced top loaders with Bosch front loaders. The frontloaders are becoming more popular (although not cheaper) due to the cost of water rates over here - in alot of places you're on a meter and pay for what you use. Front loaders use much less water than a top loader apparantly.

We've been using an AEG front loading washer for 5+ years. Reliability has been fair although i'm not sure how most washers in NZ compare to American ones that I was raised on. The problems i've found on our AEG was:

1) Front rubber door seals can perish and the water leaks out on the floor.
2) Too small to properly wash blankets.
3) End of the washing cycle (after the high speed spin), the machine pauses from some minutes before it unlocks the door latch. Kinda annoying as you know the cycle is finished but you stand clueless wondering why it just won't unlock the door.
4) Limited selection of wash cycles: I've found the front loading washers tend to be too aggressive on tops, shorts, pants, etc. which may explain why they can get the stains out. While at the same time, they tend to underclean large washes say bedsheets, duvet covers, etc.

I remember our Speed Queen top loading washing machine back in Canada lasted over 30 years. Though I don't bet on any modern unit will last that long. The thing with top loaders is you can select the type of wash cycle - delilcate washers for the cottons, while a little bit more aggressive cycle for the stubborn stains.

My 1st choice would be a Maytag here in NZ but retailers already charge 2 - 3 times more than prices in US/Can.

When you are emigrate? my advice don't leave till too late to order your washing machine, i started two months before and didn't get it till on friday before packer turn up on monday!!!! Had few days to play with it :laugh before packed away, you need leave for over 24hours to 'dry' machine out. Long story, just one of machine i want from bosch (express 1600) been discontinued and lots of companies didn't know about it!! I found out off chance after spoken to bosch company direct. So i ordered next one down (1400) from local shop sold it cheap for me at very short notice :D . Fab little local shop!

My other half swears by Bosch - for everything. If they made Bosch cars he'd be driving one.

Personally, i'd rather a walk on the beach (doing wonders for my wellbeing at the moment!!!!)
