I think Angela you need to contact them by landline. I am in the same position as yourself as i am in the process of gaining a general visa off the back of the wifes WTR visa as mine has run out. If you gain any info different to this then give me a shout, as we know that they take 40 days to be processed and this means without the clearance i will be unable to complete the process, so resulting in the inability to work.

You can apply through any UK police force, it doesn't have to be the one you last resided in. I applied for mine through Essex police, simply because if you still have a UK bank card registered at a UK address then you can apply online.
Just do a search for any police force by county name. I'm sure Essex isn't the only force to offer online processing.

Hi Angela, we were in the same predicament as you, 2yr work visa's (no check required back then) & now have our ITA. I've just gone through the same thing getting police checks from the UK. I printed off the form from Durham constabulary. I did get help from my sister-in-law who's is in Auckland & was an ex cop with Durham. She e-mailed a pal & they said that although they state they want originals for identification, because we were now in NZ photocopies would do. So along with the form, a copy of my birth cert., a copy of my passport, & an english cheque for 10 pound kindly sent by my SIL. I sent them off on the 22nd of Dec last year. About 9th of Jan I got a letter from them confirming my application, it was dated 2nd Jan & said that if I hadn't heard anything 35 days from that date of this letter to call this number etc. Well my police check arrived arrived 22nd of Jan so less than the 40 days they say so nothing to worry about. Now if only the damn FBI would get there act together, we haven't even recieved any acknowledgement from those guys yet & sent them off the same time

This is the form I used.

I sent it off a week ago and I'll update the forum if/when I get the results back. I have also sent off the paperwork for a USA FBI police check and will update the forum about how long that took as well.
Good luck.
