Am slowly putting together the pieces of the various processes available but could do with some pointers or people telling me if I've got the wrong end of the stick :o

our intended route is - arrive.. get job and temp work visa... apply for PR

however I believe that the job needs to be a skilled or long term shortage occupation to count and allow you to get PR. (Is this correct?) I think we should be alright with this as OH hoping to get work in construction (building or joinery). Fingers crossed anyway ;) but how would we go on if my job wasn't on the list? (I am a teaching assistant/teachers aide)

also - How often do they update the skilled migrants list? are things likely to change - either way - in the near future. Would be terrible to find for example they'd taken joinery off the long term shortage list, especially once we've got there and hopefully found work!

Another question - am I right thinking you cannot get your belongings shipped over until you have a work visa or PR? Is it worth paying for UK storage and requesting stuff once you're sorted or just send it and hope by the time it arrives you've found a job! OR sending it and then paying for storage in NZ?

Thanks you in advance for any replies - all advice most welcome :D

Vixxann, if your OH has quals as a Carpenter\Joiner - or building construction quals you should be OK. After what i have read here, he may need to go through the NZQ, have a look at their site, listed on this forum, and see how you get on.

Don't know about this, but wait to see what replies you get from here, as i believe, if you are a UK citizen, you can only stay for six months, and it may take a couple of months for your goods to arrive.

Problem is - he has the experience (10yrs+) but not the qualifications. Thats why we need to get over there and on the ground finding work.

Think I've got this one... :) You could ship but w/o a visa or PR you would have to pay customs tax on the belongings :uhoh Also, I think the job offer on the visa has to be for at least a year.

Hi there
Just a quick thought, I am also a teachers aide and I worked with special needs children in the UK.On our residency application I have claimed points for skilled employment as my employment here in NZ was secured due to this previous experience. My employer wrote a letter to Immigration saying why I was employed
and I am hoping to rely on this to get residency.
Saying that our application is still 'pending!
Good luck!

Denise - in the UK did you have a qualification for special needs? Or did you get the NZ job based purely on UK experience and normal TA qualification?

Good luck with your application!
