Sharon, if it is a GSM phone and at least a tri band then you will have no problems, at least on Vodafone. Not sure about the other networks but I now at least one of them uses a different system.

Yep - works fine on the Vodaphone network, but not Telecom, as they do not use Sim cards :no
Just pop into any Vodaphone shop and get a Sim card pack for $35 and you get $10 (with registering) worth of calls.

Ours worked with NZ sims. Calls are expensive though IMO. :no

Any unlocked UK GSM phone will work here on the Vodafone network, it doesnt have to be a tri-band. So o2 and Voda UK phones. Note that many UK PCN (orange, whatever 1-2-1 is called this century, virgin) phones are also GSM compatible, and they also work over here on Vodafone network, as long as they are unlocked.
The NZ Telecom mobile network is much fussier, doesnt use SIMS.

So in that case it means I will be able to use the same phone in the UK and Nz as long as I change the sim card. For the first year I will be back and forwards from one country to another. I suppose this will work out cheaper than using my UK sim card in NZ?

Yes, using your SIM in NZ means that you pay for the leg between UK and NZ and back again.... or that's the way it used to work. If a UK caller calls a UK number, they only pay for the leg of the call in the UK, you pay for the rest!
As I said though, don't know if that has changed recently.

Just as an aside...Can you get contract+phone deals in NZ? For example, say 500min/month free Xnetwork + 100 texts/month for $x/mth deals? Or is it pay-as-you-go? Was just interested...

Vodafone introduced this concept a few months ago.
The big focus at the moment is for TXT, though Voda's Choices plan has other options for calling time.

This will give you a link to the NZ Vodafone website which has their current tariffs.

We're on the "motormouth" (no comments there please :laugh ) which we pay 49c per min to all Vodafone NZ, NZ Landlines and UK landlines.
They do have contract rates, but we'll stay with this for now, and I do think it is more expensive here than the UK.
Hope that helps
