If you are in the vicinity of Mt Ruapehu - or even for miles around......

psst - I know of a place with many thousands of $$$$$ of food in the freezer though if you need it! Just give me the nod.
There will be a well stocked survival kit at the same location!

Seriously - it's quite daunting!

Wow isn't that interesting? Bit scary though.

It was due last Thursday

What's up with it Smiler? Tell us your neighbor story! Ana

Ana, it's funnier in the flesh with the actions :o (and the glass of wine)

but she heard the lehar warning on the radio. It will come right down our valley. :exit

So she grabbed all the kids and ran up the very steep hill to safety. After a while huddling there with the kids she could see the orchard workers picking fruit and the trucks trucking up and down the orchard, carrying on as usual.

She spent an hour screaming at them to get out of the way, that the lehar was coming down the valley, while they looked up at her and thought 'crazy pom' :uhoh.

It wasn't the warning, she'd misheard the story.

Seriously though, it isn't funny. This area and the Manawatu was seriously flooded in 2004.

All the residents are protesting at the moment because the regional council want to ehm 'manage' the river, taking out a million $$ loan (with $900,000) interest. They planted all the willows that were uprooted, silted and stacked up and contributed to the last flood.

This is the bridge upstream to us that was damaged in 2004, damaged being an understatement.

We now have a lehar kit in addition to the earthquake kit.

The story made me laugh, even reading it with only a cup of tea, but the reality is very sobering, and I hope you and yours won't be affected. ( Or anyone else for that matter)

Joking aside - I reckon there is a big business venture to be made here - whole body mud baths in genuine volcanic mud.

Chi Ching! $$$$$$

Thinking of a whole side line here. Glad wrap mud body treatments, face packs while you wait, dip in the pool after, fruit cocktails etc. :D

We're lucky here the house is elevated and wasn't affected in the last flood, the ones on the river plains were and some people lost everything. The community spirit it evoked is still strong today.

Indirectly we would be affected if it was as bad again, as the road was washed away. :uhoh The houses also all have rapid numbers now as the emergency services didn't know where to go.

Your kids recently :D

Scott making a trebuchet to keep the natives out

Craig shinning up the cedar with G's aerial wire thingies.

Sounds like a mad house to me Debs!! :laugh Will G be the hub of the emergency comms with all that radio kit? Do the NZ authorities use amateurs in that way like the UK do I wonder.....

It is a sobering thought, and although it is amusing to hear of your neighbours story, it also outlines how serious it all is. No wonder the kiwi's build their houses on the side of hills. Method in their madness methinks.

We've got civil defence comms now but G is the Minister of Communications and Technology and with the amount of aerial wire and towers I've got in the paddock, he'd better be able to talk to someone and request the helicopter bring in more alcohol. ;)

We were talking to some civil defence people at a fete and they were very keen to sign him up. :D

Is he really the minister?? LOL Can't wait to see this aerial farm Debs...

Steve

Yes, he is in that we've declared ourselves independant from Wanganui and Horizons Regional Council. ;)

We've appointed a Mayor and Ministers of transport, customs, immigration, rural affairs, transport, health (me) :D entertainment (me), education, arts children etc.

All great fun over happy hour!

Probably doesn't make much sense but Carol might be able to explain more, from an outsider's point of view! :D

I think the first bit of this quote sums it up really.

Well - that - and the fact they are all completely crackers.

Sounds like you are all mad - although I expect the Kiwis will make some extreme sport out of it...

I suppose when it goes off there is no chance of eagles and Gandolf flying in to rescue you a la LoTR? :laugh
