Help - it's death by Phil Collins! I keep searching on my car radio for something decent, but all I can find is soft rock. I used to listen to a mix of radio 4 for news, radio 1 for Jo Whilie and Zane Low and Radio 2 for Chris Evans and Dermot O'Leary in the UK. We like Indie, new music, politics etc. We're in the Waikato. Can anyone help??!!

First and foremost Sam, does your Radio go beyond 89.9FM, if it doesn't you will need an expander as majority of car radio's are tuned for the Japanese. Plenty of stations out there like The Breeze, Classic Hits, Harauki,The Rock etc. Just go to the likes of Repco and ask for an expander.

I know this may not be of much help... But all of the BBC radio station are available online. If you've got Real Player on your computer you can just listen whenever you want, to whatever show you want. If you haven't got Real Player, simply click on a show and it will give the option of downloading it. I know this doesn't help much but I think you can save the show to an MP3 player and plug that into your car stereo.
just to get you started here's the link to Zane Lowes show

alternatively go to
www.bbc.co.uk/radio for the whole of the bbc family radio stations home page. You can download podcasts and other such things easily from there to play in your car. Oh and its all free.

Thanks Lee - we have been listening to Justin's Ipod alot, and he does download stuff, but once I start driving I just wanted to keep it simple and find a radio station I could tune into. I think the radio goes up to about 102 or something, but sometimes it can only find 1 station over and over and it's always playing wretched Phil Collins or some other similar dirge. v v sorry to Phil fans. Maybe there are no stations in the Waikato?

There are plenty of Radio Stations that you can pick up in the Waikato whether they are local or national. Sounds to me that you may be picking up ZFM over and over.

Whilst Phil Colins can I suppose be described as easy listnening, I have to admit I feel Sam's pain, theres no way I could listen to him again and again. it must be like Japanese water torture :laugh

Disclaimer: The music of Phil Colins is in no way torturous. I understand that a great deal of people very much like his particular style and tone. The author wishes Mr Colins all the success in his future endevours, whatever they may be

Sam, you can get The Rock out in the Waikato, which is marginally better than ZFM, and heaps better than Phil Collins on constant repeat.
If you can bear the ads and sometimes crude djs, then the music is actually quite good - although it is all very 'popular' rock and indie stuff, rather than anything too off-beat.
I think the frequency for Waikato is 93fm.
