Does anyone know if you can get any good vegetarian food ? Apart from the tin from Sanitarium that looks like dog food ?
Was wondering if there were more options in higher populated places like Auckland or Ch Ch as Wanganui doesn't have much choice at all ?
I used to love the Quorn range and Linda Mc Cartney :p but so far no luck :no

This vegetarian has now turned into a "Chickenarian" as my partner calls me as there is only so much you can make with rubber veggie sausages :laugh

I found some veggie burgers, South Indian spiced, made by Frys. they are quite eatable, and not a bit rubbery... got them in New World.

there are some DELICIOUS vegie patties around..theyre in a resealable silver pouch and they say "hungry?" on them..they also have vegetarian toppers too (crumbed potato with vegies and stuff..).birds eye also have yum yum yum corn fritters..theyre crumbed and yummy..(bear in mind i cant eat corn at all usually)

i find it harder to eat as a veggie over here compared to the uk/ireland etc when shopping at the supermarket, but at restaurants its way better. (in my opinion anyway... :) )

Thanx guys for the tips - although I am aware of the ones you've mentioned.
It's more the Quorn range I miss as that was more like a substitute meat, tasted just like Chicken, same texture and everything.
I thought that somewhere like Auckland may have possibly sold it as there would be more call for it I'm sure.
Never mind, looks like I will have to stay Chickenarian for the time being ...... :uhoh
I could imagine the price for that would be horrendous anyway - so, every cloud ;)

It's not quorn, but there's some info on fake mince here (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9296).The veg mince is what we use more than anything. Veg suasages here are super mushy (which makes sense, because I think that's how kiwis like their real meat sausages too.) Oh how I miss morningstar farms and boca in the states - so fast and tasty. But we are developing our cooking skills over here at least. I use the mince for burgers, Mexican and 'meatless loaf'.

Oh how I miss Morningstar Farms and Boca. Oh and Amy's too. I miss Whole Foods - when I first started shopping there I thought it was so expensive. But compared to Foodtown, Whole Foods (also known as Whole Paycheque) is a bargain.

Hi

we don't eat meat either so I make most of our stuff from scratch I have a really easy recipe for veggie sausages which sounds a bit odd but tastes really yummy you basically mix together 1 egg, 1 medium onion (finely chopped) 1/4 tsp salt, 1 x 250g pot cottage cheese, 2 cups breadcrumbs, some mixed herbs, 2 tbsp tomato sauce, and 1/2 cup wholemeal flour,(you can add abit of milk to mix but I never need to) shape and roll in wholemeal flour then just fry -super quick and works out really cheap too as it makes about 10.!!

I also make cripsy veg nuggets, mini flalfel ect which again are gorgeous so if anyone wants any recipes let me know and I'll be happy to post them.

generally we cope without quorn, we have bought a few readymade sausages but these work out really expensive when buying for a family of 5 so i tend to save those for if we go to bbq's ect.

Lisa, I'd love to see your crispy nugget recipe if you don't mind typing! Since there are some different ingredients here - perticularly in the way of soy products - I think it's a great idea to post veggie recipes that work with what's available here. :D

This is a lovely thread - thanks all. I'm a veggie and we're about to head over for our reccie so its nice to see some recommendations. I'm a veggie as I don't like meat, so I don't mind too much that there is a lack of meat substitute - I'm a veggie would could literally eat nothing but veggies!! Well, maybe with some chocolate thrown in :laugh I have to say though that I have got very used to having a good range of choices here in the UK so its good to know in advance that things will be a little different. Maybe we should start a seperate bit of the forum for recipe swaps!! :)

Great idea - I love new recipes, so I started a Vegetarian Recipe Swap thread in the Lounge. (For those of you just visiting, and wondering why you don't see it, you have to sign up to the forum to view the Lounge.) :)

I have been veggie for 16 years, and Quorn has been my lifeblood in the UK ... I don't know how I will suvive without it.
