Getting quotes in now - help please!
I want to be sure I'm not getting ripped off as I'm sick to death of "rip-off-Britain".
Got 2 quotes so far around the £3k plus insurance mark, door-to-door for around 630 cu ft ie half a 20 footer. From Devon, UK to ChCh, NZ
Any comments on that price please? Much appreciated...

I'm not sure how much saving you get when taking less than a whole 20ft container but we paid £3200 + insurance for a whole one.

The company that we used quoted a figure for door to door Surrey to Tauranga, but AFTER they had packed everthing and put it into storage, they invoiced us with an increase of over 30% on the quote. When I queried this, they insisted that "you could not have shown our estimator everything that you were taking, or you added to to the list after his visit". I had to swallow the increase in the end as we were on a deadline with flights.
The moral is. make sure you get a watertight QUOTE.

mmm- pickfords quoted us £3k+ins for half of one- strange. Can you rememebr how many cu ft you had please? Pickfords seem to quote you per ft rather than per container.

TFR - we are using Robinsons of Manchester just under 3400 for a 20' container to Napier, but the rates go up in March. Add your insurance on top and your price is higher, and don't forget you have to ship the container from the port to your home/rental. Anything over 30 miles from the port and you pay extra too, I have literally just put the phone down to the shippers!
There are others, it is a case of shopping round and seeing what you can get.
good luck

We paid 2,705 pounds (plus insurance) for a 20' container from Biddulph, Staffs to Wellington back in August 2006. This was with Johnsons (Tel: 44 (0) 1606 592958) and they were excellent.

Have just shut the door on a visit from Whites. Nothing verbal given but will receive a quote in next couple of days so will let you know. Robinsons came yesterday and verbal quote on shared container was approx 2200+insurance of 500. Will wait and see what their written quote says. Very helpful tho. Brittania coming Monday.
May look around for seperate insurance tho, could save a penny or two.
Is anyone else having sleepless nights with all this?! :roll

interesting, thank you for that. Where abouts are you in the country. I wonder if the further away from the UK ports you live the more the cost rises perhaps?

I've been told there are only 3 companies who actually handle the shipping process themselves. The rest sub-contract their work to them anyhow.
Anyone able to confirm who the 3 are?

Pickfords do not sub contract, they handle the shipment both ends. I can also confirm that using insurers not connected to the shipping company will save you a lot of cash.

Thanks Dangermouse...could you post link/contact please to "other non connected insurers" please as that sounds very useful.

TFR, I used GB Liners based in Bristol from Cullompton,Devon to Dunedin, NZ.
Very professional, curteous staff. This end of the move was handled by NZ Van Lines, nothing was damaged and no breakages.
If I remember correctly I paid £3200 for full 20ft container....

We are going to have to have a 40ft container. Has anyone else had a 40ft container and if so how much did you pay and also how did they go about getting it loaded outside your house? One firm has told us they may have to load it into two vans outside our house and then transfer to a 40ft at their depot. Don't fancy that too much. Its not as if we are in a small culdesac. We are on a main rd with plenty of parking.

We had a 40 footer as we brought our car over. It wasn't loaded outside our house although we had room for it, just. They packed all our stuff into a large removal lorry instead. They repacked it into the container at their depot, but I wish I'd pushed for the house job now. We came from West Sussex/Surrey border to Wellington.
It was 4,600 GBP in October 05 if that helps, with Curtiss part of White and Co in Portsmouth. I wouldn't recommend them. I've done a few threads on shipping our stuff and our probs, but in short our car was badly damaged and stuff broken.
We are not totally convinced that the car came in a 40 footer. but that we had a 20 footer for our effects and the car came separately on a ro ro. That's what the loss adjuster thought because of the damage. Certainly when our stuff arrived at our house in Wellington, a 20 footer arrived and the car came separately. The car (and motorbikes) arrived here without all the docs and keys as they'd forgotten to send them. Also, it's only now as we are finally settled in a rental, that we are unpacking the final 20 boxes and stuff is missing, mainly electronics and tools.
Our insurance was with Letton Pervcival who I would recommend.
I'm sorry that all sounds very negative. I'd have been happier pushing the lock down on our container and seeing it sealed.
