I have a question with regards to the medical requirements.

My son, who is 8 years old has restricted vision in one eye only, reducing his sight to just below the 6/36 (corrected). With his glasses on and using both eyes he has near normal vision.

The medical advice states "In a person up to the age of 21 years, a severe vision impairment with visual acuity of 6/36 or beyond after best possible correction, or a loss restricting the field of vision to 15-20 degrees " but it does not make clear if this is for each eye seperately or both together.

Can anyone advise if this will prevent us in making an application?

Oh dear,

NZIS have replied quoting the webpage "In a person up to the age of 21 years, a severe vision impairment with visual acuity of 6/36 or beyond after best possible correction, or a loss restricting the field of vision to 15-20 degrees "

Funny, I'm sure I told them I was aware of that bit!

But they still have not clarified if this is in each eye individually or combined with both eyes. :(

Is anyone able to clarify please?

I was well over 21 when I had my medical but for me the Dr took the bit
"after best possible correction"
to mean what I could do with me glasses on as that was the correction I use, by default that ment both eyes. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks Debbie, He will be fine as long as they dont cover his good eye (glasses or not) at any point during the test.

They did get my children to cover up their eyes one at a time and read rows of letters. Sorry.

our kids werent checked, so i guess it depends on where u go, our youngest was a pain so distracting them somewhat, even our was basic we wore glassess all through it and they just said cover one eye with passport and read it. my wofe didnt have to, if youre kids 8 then get him to have a look at the bottom row when you go in and just recite it... that was my back up plan as cant see much without specs.

the doctors we went were really good with the kids so wouldnt worry too much i got the impression its the arents they are reallyl looking at to see if youre capable of working long term etc...

good luck with it all

its a great stress relief when u come out of medicals as it wasnt that bad, my blood pressure was well up they just did it again later and was fine,
