Hi

I thought I heard somewhere you need a reference for the landlord, like copy deeds? is this true and if not do you need anything like this? :confused:

We never rent any house before so we haven't got any previous landlord for current landlord. We used my sister who live in auckland and also owner of motel that we stayed with for a week on arrival to be our refs, both of them happy to be ref. But our landlord increased bond by extra week because of no history of previous renting, just warn you!

remember by law they can only ask for 4 weeks bond and no more than 2 weeks rent in advance (if paying fortnightly) or one weeks rent in advance (if paying weekly)

we needed to give references and got my employer to do it. if you have references from the uk it might be worth bringing them.

Thank you for your response, what should the references state and if we don't have a current employer available in NZ, who can we use? We have not rented before so therefore can't use references from previous landlords and at the moment we have no mortgage and therefore no deeds, only from previous house. Help.

we just gave them a contact name and number to ring. i'm sorry i don't know who you else you could use. but others must have been in this situation before? i'm sure someone will be able to help you out with some more info.

We didn't need any references, but they did want to see copies of our bank statements and the OH's job offer.

I think it varies form agent to agent, but just bring anything that shows you are of good character, pay on time (could be previously paid council tax bills etc), and can afford to pay (job offer, bank statements).

We didn't have any good character references, but could have given them plenty of phone numbers if necessary (the OH's old boss had offered to be a phone reference).
