Hi
Can anyone help ??
We fly out to NZ on April 9, hubby has job in Hawkes Bay.
We are going over as holiday makers, then applying for work permit once over there, then PR.
Hubby needs to ship over his tools and i would like to send some bits over, ie kitchen stuff, some toys, etc.
We were advised that Seven Seas do shipping of small amounts and rang them. They said we need a visa for doing this ??
Surely we can ship stuff over to hubbys new employer ?? or is it that we would have to go through Royal Mail as if we were sending stuff over to a 'friend' ?
Any advice ?

I think the problem is that if you ship anything into NZ without a visa they are considered liable for import tax... you, or your hubby's company would be seen as importers.
If you are a resident then you are allowed to bring in your possession (including work tools) duty free.

The shippers you rang are correct. When you make the booking for a shipper they require to see the visa within your passport, this is for purposes regarding having your container,or belongings released at this end. As you are coming in on a visitors visa, the question will be raised why tools when all you are doing is visiting.

Hi Sharon,
Hope you are ok. Things seem to be moving really fast for you - bet your mind is racing.:exit
Could you put your tools in storage in the UK until you have a correct visa, or maybe your family could look after them.
I would say put them in my container but unsure of room at this point and also am unsure of when we are leaving. Maybe someone else may be able to help you.:)

Our cousins came over on a tourist visa, and had a container full of their goods coming over at the same time. It was due to arrive about 4 weeks after they arrived. They had to get a job and have a work permit in order to avoid paying tax when the container arrived, but I dont think it they had any problems in initially sending the container.

Hello Sharon,
As we will be receiving 6 months work permit we have a similar problem. Mark needs to have a registeration as an electrician our case officer said they will issue 6 months work visa, after working there we will be issued our residency permit. Customs will charge us for our goods but when we get our residency they will give our money back. Customs office states that you should have the intention to live in NZ for good.
I hope everything works out for you

We arrived on Tourist Visa and goods arrived 2 weeks later. Our shippers asked for a copy of our ITA letter to show customs that we had an application going through and he told us that they would probably charge us a refundable 'bond' of about $1,000 (if we had been paying the tax it would have been $4,000 so we we're quite happy). In the end, they didn't charge us anything at all.... not at all sure what would have happened if our application got refused!
