Hello fellow dog lovers...I need your help in a bad way. I moved
here from Kansas City in October last year. I spent a ton of money
importing my 2 yellow labrador retrievers here, as you would know if
you have done the same, or looked into it. Sadly I have to return
to the USA for personal reasons. I had intended on staying here
permanently, but certain things are preventing this from happening.

I do not have enough money to bring both of the dogs back with me,
as I have exhausted my funds getting them here. I have tried and
tried to figure a way to get them both back but
what it comes down to is I have to find a home for one of them. In
my search to find a home I have come up with very little reasonable
options.

I decided that my older dog, Oliver would probably adjust better to
a new owner, he is better behaved, and generally a more likeable dog
than my other dog, so he is the one I am looking for a home for.
Oliver is an absolute delight, and everyone who knows him loves
him. The problem is Oliver is used to a certain kind of lifestyle
that I want him to have when I am gone. He likes to be outside, but
generally he is an inside dog. This is where I have found problems.

The people I have found that would like Oliver will only keep him
outside, and it seems they dont treat thier dogs quite as well as I
have treated my baby. Oliver is well behaved, extremely cute, and a
wonderful pet. He loves people, and loves to be around people a
lot. He is 6 years old, male neutered, and loves to go on walks.
he is low key, meaning he is not hyper, but he can keep up with you
if you like to walk long distances.

I am in Whangarei, but for a good home I am willing to travel to
bring him to an excellent environment. If you know of anyone who
either would like him, or can help me find a suitable home please
email me at Leosus25@yahoo.com

Susan, I am so sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately, I can't offer to have Oliver as we are in rented accomodation for 12 months and we negotiated with the landlord for 1 pet, who we got from the SPCA at the beginning of January. Her name is Olive, so it would have been lovely to have Olive and Oliver together!
I just want to wish you all the best with finding a good home for Oliver, I am sure you will be able to. I will ask around the people I know here.

Love
Gil

What a terrible terrible situation. I am not trying to be judgemental but I would have done whatever it took (beg/steal/borrow)to take my "kids" home with me. I wish your dogs all the best. God knows they need it.

Stu,
Apologies if I'm speaking out of turn here, since we are unaware of Susan's situation, she may already have done whatever she can as at least one of her dogs is going back. We don't know, (and don't need to). I appreciate you said you're not trying to be judgmental, but I'm not sure we need to make her feel guilty/bad for trying this as potentially a last shot at resloving things. Please read this the way it's intended, just want to make sure Susan's feeling OK. Sounds to me like she is absolutely doing her best in a very difficult situation,

You are right the intent was not to make her feel bad, that would happen no matter one writes or doesn't. It is a no win situation I am afraid. Often times the focus is only on how humans feel; I beg to differ, this has as bad an impact on the dog too. It is all a matter of perspective I suppose. Regards,

Susan, I wish I could take him but we are in a no dog situation with our rental at the moment. I have sent your text on to a friend who works for the Guide Dog school and have asked her to forward it on to some dog people so maybe something will come from that....good luck!

Hi Susan!

Keep us posted of how it all goes, ok?

Hi Susan, I'm very sorry to hear about your situation, I'm going through similar emotional stuff with my 20 year old cat, Arthur, whom I would dearly like to bring to NZ. Speaking of cats, how does Oliver do with feline-types? I have a friend in Taupo who, IMO, needs a dog friend just like Oliver! Take care of yourself with all your stressful plans:)

Susan ((((hugs))) to you. We know exactly what you are going thru. We have it this side. Just found out that the dog we where planning on taking wont make the journey, the other dog (her father) is already in poor health and we have to do what's best for him (something we would have to do even if we were staying here) and our house bunny (which is my 11yrs old sons) isnt allowed to come into NZ (my DS even wrote a letter to Santa asking to turn him into a dog so we could take him:wah). Its absolutely heart braking to try and find homes for them.
I wish you well and hope your fur baby will soon be settled.
Take care

Oh Susan - if only we weren't in a rental........

I know just how you must be feeling because we had to give up our boxer bitch 'Dinah Dog' before we came to NZ. It absolutely broke my heart and there are tears in my eyes as I write this.

BUT, for us there was good news - we found her a wonderful home and she is very happy there.

I know that you are doing your best for your Oliver and I hope and pray that everything will work out for both of you in the end.

Have you tried asking at your local vets ?? They should know all the dog lovers in your area and may be able to point you in the right direction. Also, ask them if there is a 'Labrador/Retriever Rescue Society'. Breed rescue societies were common in the UK (I used to do it for boxers) maybe they have something similar here ?

Take care and let us know how you go on.

Hugs,

Julie

Thanks to all for the support... yes this is a very difficult time for me for sure. Not only having to leave my NZ dream behind but to find a home for my beloved baby as well is constantly on my mind. The tears I have shed and the hours I have spent thinking about this situation would make you sick. I am alone here, I just came with my dogs and my resources financially are not good so yes I have exhausted the possibility of taking them both, if there was any way to change it I would. Thanks gil for your understanding! I have 2 jobs here just in order to get one home, I work everyday, all the time just so I dont have to give both of them up!

I have contacted the local vets, the SPCA (no help there), and the Labrador rescue. The vets came up with a few options, but none that would suit Oliver. The lab rescue might come through, but nothing yet. I have had good responses from here, I knew this would be a good resource for this type of problem. I will keep my predicament posted here, and thanks again for all the sympathy and help!

Oh Susan I've shed a tear for you and Oliver too! :wah not that that's going to help!

We are in the UK which is useless for your predicament I'm afraid. We're panning to be in NZ within the next couple of months and will be taking our two little cavaliers with us, I couldn't bear the thought of leaving them behind, so I really feel for you.....

I really hope you find him a kind and lovin home..... and all the best in your return to the US.

We had to leave our 4 cats and 2 dogs behind and found them all lovely homes, all originally from a rescue centre in Cyprus but $25,000 was too much for us to find and we could not choose which ones. My heart goes out to you.

I missed them so much that when we moved into a new rental I asked if we could have 2 cats, they agreed. I had already seen them on Trademe. A young girl was leaving to work in Australia and needed to find homes. We met half way as they lived in Taupo. They are doing fine with us in fact they have become more friendly than when they were with them (never used to sit on their laps). The girls flat mate is coming over today to visit them.

I suggest you place an advert in Trademe with a good photo, because people like us without residency can not use the rescue homes they will not let you take them without residency. Plus the supermarket boards, I always read those when I was looking for a cat.

I am sure Oliver will find a new home soon. If we were at the stage of getting our own home, I would have jumped at the chance, when are you going?? It will be 5 months or more before we are in that position.

hi Susan -- do you mind if I ask, are you returning to Kansas City? That's where I'm from. Went to school in Raytown, lived on both sides of the state line, most recently Overland Park (until 2003) before California. Maybe we can get some Midwesterners to put their heads together and hunt for a solution --

I was just thinking the same thing, we have 3,067 members, from that number 635 are active.

If a portion of us donated a bit you could take Oliver home.

If it can be arranged I’d stomp up some cash for the Oliver Fund!

(if a fund is started, will someone PM me because I’m a bit dim and I’ll probably miss the thread!)

OK........ There's seems to be a few people prepared to go for the whip round option, and I'm sure with a little campaigning we will be able to raise a couple of thousand £'s or more! :yes

At the end of the day it's down to Susan to decide if she's happy to try this option or whether she would want to stick with the plan to find Oliver a new home....

Susan, I'm sure if you let us there will be enough people on this very popular forum who will be willing to throw in as much or as little as they can afford to 'help get Oliver home'. :nice1

Heads will have to be put together on the logistics of the process.... but I'm sure there are people on here with know how! ;) and I'm prepared to put my money were my mouth is and start the ball rolling... :raebanana

I'd be happy to contribute £50 to the Get Oliver Home fund if it goes ahead.

I am planning to bring my two cats to NZ later this year, and one of my fears is that if it doesn't work out and I want to come home I couldn't afford to bring the cats, so I am happy to contribute to someone else in that position while I'm still financially secure!

In the meantime I will ask my boyfriend to ask his friends/ family in NZ if anyone is looking for a dog, though I have the feeling most of his friends and family keep their dogs outside, so may not be suitable.

WOW. I dont know what to say...its awfully kind of all of you to even think about a fund....it is $3,600- $4,000 NZD ($3,600 is the lowest quote i have gotten, but a sketchy deal) per dog to get them back. I know it doesnt seem like much but my resources are tapped! I have had a few responses from dog lovers who want to think about Oliver, but nothing solid yet. I dont know how to respond properly to the fund idea, of course I am touched but jeez, like I said i dont know what to say!!!!!

Nicola, like you I was going to look into PO box/Account options today, but the down sides are I'm based in the UK :roll , and I'm also a fairly new member to the site. I think people may be happier sending money to an NZ PO Box and to someone who's well established on the forum. So, if you're willing to manage the fund that would be fantastic... good on ya!:nice1

I love that this forum is filled with animal lovers. I had to rehome a dog a while back and it was one of the toughest things I've done.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but on the off chance that we're not able to raise enough and Oliver can't be sent home, perhaps we could agree to donate any money collected to the NZ SPCA, or something like that? Just a suggestion.

Anyone friendly with their local banker? If an account could be opened for the fund, than anyone with a NZ bank account can easily transfer money into it. Doesn't help those without a NZ account, but may make it easier for those here already.

Also, I don't know how much money they earn, but sausage sizzles seem to be a popular fundraiser...

I have been on to Barclays Bank this morning and they have set up an account. I explored the charity organisation account option but that required three signatories! As we are dotted all over the country I thought this would take too long to set up, and we only have about a month to raise the money! The easiest and quickest option was to open the account in my name ; So folks I need you to trust that I'm of good character. Here's a little bit about me;

My names Jayne Cadby, I'm 41, married with two children, live in Stourbridge in the West Midlands and a Midwife by profession. We have been granted PR (so I passed all my police checks ;) ) and are just waiting to sell our our, before we head off for a new life in NZ.

If anyone wants to speak to me personally before donating I will happily provide my phone number via PM. I will send a full statement of the accounts activity to Nicola when the money is transfered to the NZ account. So please, please start donating, lets show our friends from around the world what caring, animal loving people the Brits are.....

If you do make a donation please could you PM your name and ENZ member name, so that I can acknowledge your donation.

:raebanana OK.... WE ARE UP AND RUNNING FOR UK DONATIONS!!:raebanana

I have been on to Barclays Bank this morning and they have set up an account. I explored the charity organisation account option but that required three signatories! As we are dotted all over the country I thought this would take too long to set up, and we only have about a month to raise the money! The easiest and quickest option was to open the account in my name ; So folks I need you to trust that I'm of good character. Here's a little bit about me;

So come Brits lets get raising some dosh!! Lets help Susan get her beloved Oliver home... account details as follows:

Bank: Barclays Bank

Account name: Mrs J P Cadby

Wow again. I would definately wait on starting a fund for Oliver. Today I, met with a friend's mother who might be interested, it seems like a good fit so far as we may do a trial next week. This situation, apart from missing each other could be beneficial as the friend's mom is a kind of lonely work at home person who's lab died last year. She actually might be able to give him more love and attention than me.

Oliver has the beginnings of arthritis in his back knees and I know that the trip out here was pretty hard on him. What I want is what is best for him, and if this lady can give him a great life here, then that may be the best option yet. Fenced yard, dog house, freedom to go in and out as he pleases, and an attentive owner who is lonely for a companion who might even let him sit on the couch :)

I feel so grateful for the gesture of kindness shown by fellow animal lovers here. Thank you, and I will keep everyone posted on the situation. Time is on my side, and it looks like enough advertizing will get attention from many areas!

Hey Susan that sounds quite promising! At the end of the day only you know whats best for Oliver, and hopefully with enough attention on this forum Oliver will come up trumps! (as they say) whether that be an new home in NZ, or back to the US with you. Keep us posted about the new home option, if it doesn't work out for any reason, let us know and we will start the donations to 'help get Oliver home' ball rolling again! :yes

Good luck with it ;)

I've been trying, but no reply from "he who does" yet - I asked for it to be made a sticky....

I’ve been following this thread with interest and – heavens - what a wonderful, generous response people have made to Leosus’ plight. It makes me really glad to be involved in this forum.

Following the spontaneous offers to help Leosus financially instead of re-housing Oliver, I contacted Leosus to ask her which pet-transport company she intended using. (It’s possible that emigratenz.org would be able to negotiate a deal for Oliver – meaning less money would need to be raised.)

Leosus’ reply indicates that she is still considering what the best possible outcome for Oliver would be.

In her post above, Leosus says “I would definitely wait on starting a fund for Oliver” - - - because perhaps the best outcome for Oliver might be that he doesn’t face another flight.

So, at ENZ we’re going to wait for further news from Leosus about re-housing v transporting and we’re on hand to help if a good home can’t be found for Oliver. :)

That is exactly what happened when we re-homed our dog in the UK.

It would have been very stressful at her age to bring her with us so we made the best decision for the dog, not for us.

We keep in regular contact with her new owners and have some wonderful photo's of her which give the proof of how spoilt she is..........:yes

Whatever your final decision, Leosus I wish you all the very best and you now know that you have the backing of this wonderful forum and its members to support you.

Keep us updated,

Julie
