Hiya,

I was lucky enough to get PR without having a job offer, however, we did always intend to get a job before we headed out, using Skype for interviews. Unfortunately, the employers that we've been going for haven't been quite as progressive as that! Most of my job seeking efforts from the UK have been met with "thanks, but tell us when you are in NZ" or "We want someone to start in the next couple of weeks."

However, I've found it really useful for networking - I've got contacts for meeting up with or for bothering with my CV when we are actually out there. We just do have to take the plunge and go out without a definite job...

Though a Kiwi, my OH had been in the UK for 8 years. She applied for an NZ job online, they arranged a video interview (at a nearby business facility at their expense), and she got the job.

She also had a phone interview (+ follow up) for another position too.

I had a phone interview for my job - applied from seeing the advert online with CV and covering letter, had a few email exchanges with the department head and then a phone interview a month or so after that. All very relaxed (was in bed with glass of wine in one hand, phone in the other and CV/portfolio out to refer to if I needed it - which I didn't) - they rang back about 5 minutes after the end to ask when I could start. Working in health though, they may be more used to overseas recruiting.

Lots of other companies especially recruitment people want to meet you in person we found so that seemed a bit of a loss.

Good luck in your search!

I had a similar thing happen to me last year. Thing was it caught me out because they hadn't told me they were going to do so beforehand.

I must have sounded a right dork, cos I was half asleep and thought I was talking to a job agency and not the actual employers.

talked to a recruiter the other day and they want to set up some skype interviews in a month or so... really interesting how into skype they are. not a good or bad thing, i just find it interesting

i got my first job in the UK all those years ago after a long distance phone interview (i was still in uni in welly at that point). a huge leap of faith by them and myself. i reckon it worked out. good times.

i've certainly heard a lot of people say that employers want you to be in NZ before they'll interview you. it's a pain in the butt, but i think it's understandable in some cases. no doubt depends on your field.

Re telephone / video interviews - there is a recent thread about this that may be helpful:

Hello, I may a bit late to chime in on this thread but I've been working with a recruitment agency. I'm in the United States they in NZ. I am a social worker and I chose to move to NZ because I found this agency that only recruits social workers. I paid them a very small fee, signed a contract and then we were starting the process. They checked all my references, gathered all my educational information, etc. Once they had all the upfront information they then work with agencies to put me forward for jobs.

They act as the in-country reference and go between. So far they've set me up with 2 phone interviews. What's also been nice is that they have provided me with a ton of information about what to expect during the interview, cultural background information, how to answer particular scenarios, etc.

At first I was unsure about working with an agency but now that I've been working with them since June I have nothing bad to say. The process does take time and even longer now with a bad economy. They've been up front and honest with me as well as working within the time frames that I set forth. I was more overwhelmed about having to find a job on my own and navigate that process. Once I am in NZ they will also check in with me for a period of time, help me get settled, and help navigate any cultural differences/questions I may encounter.

I have a phone interview this coming Monday and we're hoping for it to be my last! I'll keep you posted.

Hi, Was looking through the forum then bumped into this thread. I have also been looking for such a agency who can arrange for interviews while I am not in NZ. Appreciate if you can help to share the agency details , in case they can help out. Thanks in advance.
