We have 2 worm farms ... one for veg waste, and the second for dog pooh!

First one is working really well, and even with a family of four the worms are munching their way through our waste.

Second - doggy doo one, not so great, but worms are still alive, but we didn't put enough veg matter in, so are trying to gradually make it better. Gross, but better than the alternative!

I've also got 2 worm farms for same purposes as Lou, though my worms seem to love the doggy poo. The farms are made out of old tyres I got free from the local garage. The Zerowaste website has instructions on how to build them.

The trick with the worms is not to overload them with food as it just rots and goes slimy before they have a chance to eat it. Add a little garden lime and mix in, this helps keep the worms environment just as they like it. Also don't let them dry out. When you open the worm farm it should smell of compost not rotting food.

Well I learned from exsperience that too much cofee grounds is not good. They did not like that at all. A good balance of stuff is good.

Well I have my second tip now.....

Works kept escaping despite the lid being on so I had a chat with the nice man at Earthly Delights in Chch who informed me it most likely that the bedding is not damp enough depsite following instructions on soaking bedding block that came with the Can-O-Worms. I poured on another litre or so of water and the problem now seems to be solved......at least I hope so

I think it's been mentioned, but I understand the orange peel and coffee grounds help neutralize "caustic" material such as onions.

Hoe can I tell if my new worm farm is moist enough or too dry?
