Hi all,
I was looking through this forum wondering if anything can help. So far without success. I am a French PhD student in the University of Canterbury. I did 6 month already which mean i got an other three years to go. I lived in new zealand since January last year and I intend to stay. For many reason having a residency will make my life so easier.
So I looked into the general skill. it seems that i can get this residency only if i have a job or a job offer. My PhD is somehow a job and I was wondering if somebody came across this situation. I read as well that you can get 50 point for undergraduate level and 55 for any postgrad. is it cumulative ?
I sort of want to meet somebody that can help do anybody know where can i go ?
cheers

Hi Florian and Welcome to THE forum! Bienne Venue!
To answer your questions briefly...
1) No the points are not cumilative you have to choose which one matches your education at the time of applying.
2) You will score additional points for completed study in NZ as a NZ qualification.
3) Since you are, as I understand it a research associate, you must already have a degree and so as a graduate you can claim 50 points at present.
4) Your current position, if it IS A JOB, i.e. a salaried full time position you may already be in a postition to apply.
5) Speak to your local NZIS immigration officer for some advice they are very helpful.
6) much will depend on your current visa status i.e. Student Visa or Long Term Work Visa.
7) Your age (I'm guessing 22-25) will give you more points to add to your total and your location, outside Auckland, may also help.
8) Visit the NZIS website and use the points calculator to estimate your current total....current selection point is I believe 130 points!
9) You will also need to pass the English Language requirements but if your spoken English is as good as your written English I can see no problems there! Just a bit of brushing up required here and there...and it's light years ahead of my spoken French which is more like "Franglais than Francais"
Hope this helps, Adieu
Karl

Thank you Karl,
Yeah I get paid through a scholarship, so somehow for me it look like a job. I got several years of experience as i graduate in 1998 then work. Since I lived in many countries mostly in UK though.... hence I did not sit an english test for entering in Canterbury... so i might get exempted as well for immigration.
Yes I gather I just should go to the immigration and speak with an immigration officer.
Just an other question, I intend to do some community services does that help to get more points. what is the point limit at the moment to get the residency ?
Thank you again for your help

Hi Florian,
The latest selection point is set at 140 and will fall further if NZ is to attract the required number of migrants it needs.
Community service work will not add to your points total per se but it will be a good thing to see from the point of view of your ability to settle and provide a postive contribution to NZ.
Regards
