We've been contemplating opening a NZ bank account so that we can start to transfer funds etc when we are ready. We can do this no more than 3mths before we arrive in NZ but until we have a permanant NZ address we are unable to get access to these funds.
We will be put up in a motel initially by Eric's employers, a motel address we know is not acceptable to banks, so in the first month how do we get at our money!
Does anybody know of a way around this problem? Are PO Boxes available and is this acceptable to banks? What has everybody else done?
Thank you in advance.

| PO boxes are readily available. Your NZ bank should be happy to deal with you at PO Box if you provide a letter from your employer and perhaps references from a UK solicitor or such like when opening the account, explaining your situation. |

Hi
We stayed in motel type accomodation when we arrived in NZ....there was no problem in accessing our bank account which we had set up from the UK. We just gave the bank our motel address care of the owners and then changed it when we bought a house....no problem!

Thank you both for your advice here.
Wendy, may I ask who you opened an account with?

We opened an account with HSBC and were given immediate access via internet and an eftpos card. Statements were mailed to our UK address until we arrived here and asked for a change.
The cards they mailed us worked first time on arrival with no messing about. All in all a top class service. It also cost only £10 to transfer any amount of money as we also have a UK HSBC account.
HSBC only have branches in Auckland but this to date has not been a problem. (cash tills are shared with Westpac but you get cash out at most shops) They don't do credit cards here though which has been a pain as we have had to supply income evidence to other providers. |

Hi!
We bank with the National Bank of New Zealand. I opened the account over the phone.....a free call.... and everything was waiting for us when we arrived in NZ. I transferred money before we left and it was immediately available here.
