Bit of a food chain going on at the Justbishop house!!! No

Veronica, I spoke to the old guy who runs the place at Shropshire. He has no computer, no email and doesn't know how to work those blasted fandangled machines... all his quotations are done via snail mail and paper. Which is nice! Will let you know the price (just have to get the dogs remeasured this weekend.

LOL, yes, it is quite the food chain, but when you work in a pet store, these things tend to happen...stuff "followed" me home alot Smile

If you want to be even more shocked, add to that another ferret (Kirby passed away Oct.31,) Another rat (Arwen, my female, mommy to Merry, died a few weeks after giving birth due to complications,) another snake (Claudia, presumed birth defects,) and the fact that we live in a 2 bedroom apt. (used to be in a 1 b/r!)

Anyway, kinda off topic...soz!

and BTW, only the cat and the dog get to roam free together. Everyone else is carfully seperated for their playtimes out of the cages :)

Hey! I am hearing this and could just cry! We have one older "slightly"overweight Wink golden retriever, one middle aged jack russell, and two gentle older cats. I saw the quarentine costs for each animal for 30 days and thought I may have to come up with retirement homes here for all of them. Now the thought of such expensive flight costs also!!! With 4 children also making the move, the thought of not bringing our animals to help with the emotional part of this move, is very upsetting. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi Terry,

Not sure but your Jack russell and cats may be able to fly as additional luggage. This means that you will just pay the handling and extra weight.
I think there may be a maximum weight to do this (possibly around 32kg incl box) but not sure.

your older dog may also be able to travel this way, worth investigating.

We have to fly ours on Cargo as we aren't allowed to fly animals as additional luggage from the UK to NZ.

Check it out first before you offload the pets..

One other thing... I view it like this... I have two cars at home that mean nothing to me, but have the pets that mean the world... selling the cars to transport the pets is, for me, just a matter of course.

Hi, I nearly wrote something the same earlier but didn't know if it was being a bit moralistic, but as Carl has said it I'll stick my two pence worth in.
Once we started talking about emigrating I started a 'dog fund'. to help pay towards them coming out and one of the things I've been doing is selling stuff on ebay. (One is an 11 year old lurcher and the other is a lab/rottweiler size mongrel (thick as a plank but very loving) I am pretty sure the older one wil cope on the journey but worry about the younger, he is not very brave.) They are both big dogs so its going to cost us loads, if it means we have to go without something else then so be it, they are part of the family. Each of us has to make choices on things like that and that is the hardest part about emigrating. cheers

veronica, ruthj

I got a response from the pet freight company Golden Arrow (sounds like a telephone greeting from the local chinese restaurant doesn't it?)

Unfortunately our oldest Border Collie was put to sleep on monday due to a brain tumour which was causing seizures etc.. very sad day. however we have a quote now for

1 large German Shepherd
1 medium border collie
1 cat.

All in costs for transportation from Manchester to Auckland in July, including all blood tests (additional cost for the extraction of blood from local vets not included as we have to sedate the collie and cat for this)

= £4047.00

Fair price i think.

Carl

Glad you seem to have got sorted out with Golden Arrow - they do have an excellent reputaion.

So sorry to hear about losing your dog - it is heartbreaking isn't it, as they are a part of family. Not any easier even though you know it was best for them. I,m sure he/she had a lovely life with you and your family and you will always have lots of good memories of him.

I've just been looking through the net to clarify a few things our vet has said and I thought others might find these two sites useful

www.petexports.co.uk/newzealand.html

there is a link from this one on to the maf site in NZ which lists all the required tests etc. cheers Veronica
