That's another good thing about New Zealand imho . I read somewhere that asylum seekers are costing the UK taxpayer about 18 grand each and there were 100,000 of them last year. Thats £1.8 billion by my reckoning. On the other hand New Zealand's immigrants are a big big benefit to their economy.

Goldwheels, just remember you will be the immigrant in NZ, and thankfully NZ has a much better level of treatment towards assylum seekers than the UK does.
Just a warning, kiwis are much more egalitarian than some of their British cousins, and if you do emigrate to NZ I would leave attitudes like that behind.
NZ is NOT a little Britain, but a modern multicultral Pacific nation without the old hang up of the UK |

I did a Google search on this gordster. I found:
http://web.amnesty.org/report2003/nzl-summary-eng
http://www.humanrights.co.nz/
To sum these up; in 2001 the New Zealand government started locking up asylum seekers.
The High Court found that this was unlawful because it failed to comply with national and international refugee law.
The New Zealand government appealed this decision and continued placing asylum seekers into detention centres.
In April 2003 The Court of Appeal ruled that the Immigration Service has the power to detain refugee status claimants on their arrival in New Zealand.
So as of now, New Zealand is locking up asylum seekers or placing them into secure centres.
Immigration Minister Lianne Dalziel said.........there was an underlying right of a nation to decide who could enter the country.
If the above is what you mean by "NZ has a much better level of treatment towards assylum seekers than the UK" then I agree with you. |

Gordster
No offence was meant to be made about immigrants, but from the experience I have had over the last few months in trying to emigrate to New Zealand, I have found the NZ has a tighter grip on the immigration rules than we do have here. It is only just now that the UK government have realised this and are trying to repair the damage they have already done. Also asylum seekers here are using this country as a free ticket to do as they please and it’s the tax payers who have to pick up the bill. There is a proper way of doing things and New Zealand seemed to be doing the right thing, i.e. have a job, have a good level of English, and to be able to support your self without scrounging of the government. So to round this of there is a difference between Asylum seekers and immigrants. [/quote] |

Hi mbrain
You will probably find persuading the wife will be the easiest part. There are plenty of jobs advertised on the internet, but trying to get one I found very hard. Most wanted to know if you had residence papers already otherwise they didn't seem interested.
Good luck |

NZ did introduce some draconian laws to deal with assylum seekers a couple of years back, but under pressue from the aussie govt. The Aussies have a much stronger stance against illegal immigrants, and the treatment of them in Australia has been deplorable. 14 year kids who have only ever lived in war torn Afganistan locked up, and numerous accuastions of sexual assualt and physical violence towards detainees.
Then there was the whole incident where Australia palmed off a bunch of refugees to Nuie and NZ after they weren't prepared to deal with them.
Australia has gone to the opposite end of the spectrum, and their approach and won them free friends in NZ.
NZ does have these laws, but exercises better treatment towards illegal immigrants, but is also helped the distance most people have to travel to NZ. Not as easy as jumping on a truck crossing the channel! |
