I find when looking a job ads for my industry ( IT ) most state that they will not consider overseas applicants unless they already have NZ residence.

I wondered if people who have gained NZ employment before applying for residance can relate their experiences with job hunting in NZ.

How familiar! Most run a mile if you haven't got residency or are not in the country! I am a Chartered Chemist and my Wife a Biochemist/ Chartered Biologist and have met with the same problems.

You have an ace up your sleeve if you ar in IT as it is and ocupational priority so my advice, for what it's worth, is get in via work to residency. This category is still open! You may have to jump in and paddle i.e. go there and find a job first! Have you explored the possibility of getting a job search visa with NZIS?

Also heck out specialist IT recruitment agencies of which there are many in NZ.

Be aware the IT boom has been and gone and although IT jobs exist they seem to be for top flight pro's. Sorry I don't know your experience and quals!

Watch this space I have some info from the NZ London Expo that might help. I'll post it tomorrow if I can!

Me again!

We were sucessful eventually in securing a job offer but it takes a lot of effort. Bear in mind that although employers do use agencies they don't like to pay the 15%-20% of your first year salary as commision unless they can avoid it. The Kixiws admire initiative and get up and go and therfore you may be better taking the direct approach and circulating your details around various companies. Check ou the New Zealand Herald Web Site, http://www.nzherald.co.nz, you can search and register for automatic updates as job come up. For research use the new zealand yellow pages and search in the region you are interested in! fingers crossed

Incidently I used to live in Auckland from 1987-1991 and plan to return next year with my wife and twin baby daughters
