Hi Guest,
List as follows...some pricy....some not so pricy!
Parnell, Kohimarama, Mission bay, Remuera, Ellerslie, Freemans Bay, Waiheke Island.
There are so many places. I recommend a book called ..not suprisingly...'where to live in Auckland' it details who lives where, schools, racial mix, social mix, ameneties etc...it's a bit of a good read too and will wet your appetite!
Where in the CBD are you working? How much time will you consider to be OK doing to commute! What type of place are you looking for?

Apologies, as I was not logged on when I raised this question. I may have job in Stanley St, Parnell which is an absolute dream in terms of commuting by public transport. (I don't do city centre driving)
My immediate thoughts were the North Shore and using the ferry to commute, any ideas how crowded / reliable the ferry services are. I would welcome any other ideas for other areas, perhaps using the train, as I am sure the trains cannot be as packed an unreliable as the commuter services into London. |

If you are working in Parnell forget the East Coast Bays unless you want a 2 hour commute to cross the bridge or unless you start work very early! Try Ponsonby and Freemans bay areas not far from Parnell or if you definately want to go North Shore try Northcote or Birkinhead areas where you can drive to the ferry then a catch a bus. Devonport is another option where you can do the same via a ferry to the CBD district and catch a bus and for the more exotic get away from it all lifestyle Waiheke sland has a regular ferry to CBD. Houses off Onewa road in Northcote feed the main drag to the motorway over the bridge so this gives you a head start if you must take the car...but the queues oh the queues! The Orakei basin area is another area to consider!

PS I used to live in St Stephens Avenue at the top of Parnell Rise! Small world eh! |

| Thanks I will look at some of those places. I know everyone goes on about the queues on the bridge etc but surely surely they cannot be as bad as the ones into London that I currently endure. I mainly take the option to travel to work hanging onto a pole six inches too high for me, with my nose stuck in someones armpit and a briefcase jammed against my backside, so anything has to better than that. |

Hey guys,
I have an opinion on Ponsonby. I lived there for four months a while ago. It was a cool place to be, with bars and cafes galore. We lived on Richmond road, I think it was. It was across the road from Woolworths and right next door to a nursery. We had very friendly neighbours and experienced no trouble whatsoever. It is also on the Link bus route.

This takes you all over Auckland including Parnell and is fairly frequent.
The Red Dog in Ponsonby does great crocodile pizzas... |

We are probably going to be moving to NZ (Auckland) later this year. We have 2 girls and keen to move into the catchment area for the Epsom Girls' Grammar School. The suburbs we have been looking at are Mt Eden, Epsom, Remuera and Parnell. What do people think of these areas as places to live? |

Hi Fergus,
As Karl suggested, "Where to live in Auckland" is well worth buying...does exactly what it says on the tin!! I think they are updating it annually which is useful given the rapidly changing nature of Auckland at the moment. It also gives the School zones for Auckland schools which is useful for what you are looking for.
All 4 suburbs you have mentioned are 'pukka' places...but come with a price tag to match!! Unless you're earning mega-bucks, you'll need a few quid behind you to be able to buy there. In 'the zone', prices go up by 20% or so because of the demand from other parents!
