Hi all,
Although we're planning to move out to Christchurch I just got a vague sniff of a job possibility in Auckland (applied for, not heard back yet)...
We've been to Auckland (for a few days during the Americas Cup in early 2000) but aside from that no real insight into the place. I guess the centre of town at that time isn't really representative of what it's like day to day.
So, anyone have any info - like, what's it like to live there, what suburbs or further afield are good places to look for somewhere to rent/buy, what's the standard of living like, how expensive is it compared to other parts of the country, that sort of thing???
And if, say, you're a cyclist who currently commutes 25K each way to work (across London), would you be a) able to do, or b) nuts to even think about doing, the same sort of thing in Auckland?
At least this wasn't a boring question about bureaucracy. No, I've plenty more of those saved up for later...!
Oh, just realised I should have posted this in a different part of the forum. Sorry!

Hi Dan,
Auckland, for all the critisim it receives is still a good place to be! The city life and all it's amenities are there when you want them but you can keep the city at a respectable distance if you like. Wellington likes to think of itself as cosmopolitan, and to some extent I suppose it is...but no more so in my opinion than AKL. AKL is surrounded by so many good beaches, bush, islands etc etc that I think it's impossible to get bored! There really is something for everyone depending on where you live in or around the city. You can travel north to the BOI or south top the Ski fields at weekends, or even Taupo and Rotorua, all easily commutable. Theres always something happening and the weather although humid at times is pretty good.
