Can anybody give an indication of which cars are popular on the second hand market (About 4-5 years old) and how much you are likely to pay.
Are people carriers readily available and if so what type?
Are there any cars that should be avoided?
Any thoughts on this would be useful as the New Zealand car market is going to be different than here in the UK.
Thanks
Mike. |

Sincere advice - don't sweat the small stuff.
There are so many car dealerships in NZ (even smaller towns will have them) that you will be spoiled for choice at excellent prices.
Living in Ch Ch we had our pick of hundreds of 7 seaters ranging from 4x4 to Flexibly configured small estates.
You will find the prices per age are similar to the UK but that older cars are the rule as they are in much better condition (no salt so very little rust) and often much lower mileage. Most kiwis drive a japanese import (which come in at 7 years old)
If you bring enough money to buy a 5 year old car in the UK you will be laughing over here. Just be prepared to be flexible.
Have fun and enjoy it! |

On a more specific note, what is the chance of picking up a 2nd hand Mini Cooper in the Chch area? Or in whole of NZ for that matter - i.e. is it worth us looking into shipping one over once we are settled?
I believe shipping costs to be c. 2.4k£ .... excluding import fees etc.

| HI everyone....Is it true that you are taxed per miles on diesel cars? Is diesel cheaper than petrol....I know petrol is pretty cheap over there. |

Old mini cooper for NZ
We have a BMW/Bimi at the moment but for NZ we thought old ones would be cheaper |

From what we sawout there, oldder classic type cars are abundant and in very could condition. Most seem to be in daily use. Whether or not they are easily come by for sale I dont really know. Maybe worthchecking out some local Freebie papers.
www.baytrader.co.nz may be worth a look. It only covers bay of plenty on NI. but may have links?? |

There is a Road User Charge licence that applies to diesel cars, as well as some other heavy vehicles. This licence is sold in 1000km units costing between $25 and $27 per 1000km. The cost of diesel is around 60% that of petrol. |

I suppose at approx $600 for an annual mileage of 20000km (not sure of the annual mileage or should that kilometrearage?) if diesel 60% cheaper it might still work out cheaper than a petrol car....
Does anyone know the current price of fuel down there at the moment?
Thanks for the info Cliff |

If I am doing my somes correctly, equivalent of standard unleaded works out at £1.92 per gallon. Please feel free to put this right if you know otherwise. |

Hi
As you are aware petrol prices have gone up everywhere, at the moment I pay $1.22 per Ltr of unleaded, and $0.72 for Diesel. It was $1.05 and $0.62 respectively about 5 - 6 weeks ago. For the diesel car I put 10,000km's on for road user charge as you have to pay admin fees each time you buy your kilometres.
I also find that alot of people are driving around in Jap imports as they are alot cheaper than buying a Holden or a Ford, also there are more high powered cars on the road here as the insurances are alot cheaper than the UK. I drive a Subaru Legacy GT-B twin turbo and it cost me $270 a year to insure, where as in the UK it would definitely be over a £1000.
4x4 is the way to go here, if you like to go out and about and explore, alot of the roads are gravel / dirt when you go of the main highways.
Cheers Sean |

Answer for Diesel/Fuel discussion
10000 Kms (6250 Miles) Petrol MPG average 30. Diesel MPG average 40.
RUC for 10000Kms (6250 Miles) = $268
Petrol: $1.21 Ltr ($5.49/Gall)
Diesel: $0.74 Ltr ($3.36/Gall)
Petrol: 6250 Miles/30MPG = 208.3 Galls req @ $5.49 = $1143
Diesel: 6250 Miles/40MPG = 156.25 Galls req @ $3.36 = $525
RUC = $268 (Diesel user tax paid at Post Offices etc)
Diesel Costs = $525
Total in Diesel for 10000Kms is $793
Total in Fuel for 10000Kms is $1143.
Buying a 4x4 Diesel Toyota import!
