| the points system gives you 50 points for a job that lasts a minimum of three months. i wonder how many sham companies will be set up to exploit this by offering jobs for 3 months + 1 day to people who pay a fee to some dodgy immigration agent? |

Some undoubtedly, but that's an easy one to figure out and has already been in place for some time to help get work permits of old. NZIS are fairly well sorted to spot that one.
NZIS also got allocated special budget to establish a Fraud Unit to beef things up for SMC, and in 2001 laws were passed to make it a crime to provide misleading inofrmation to NZIS, 7 years jail or $500,000 fine.
However more subtle scams will probably arise, such as fake work experience in comparable countries.
Blimmin' queue jumpers, should line up with everyone else and learn to accpet NO for an answer. |

thanks for that jamie. i was really worried about this because i have 110 points without job offer (120 outside auckland) and i thought this meant i could be behind a barrowload of people with dodgy job offers and never get in unless i got a job offer first, which i do not think will be easy. i was a bit more relaxed about it all after reading jcm's post.
| Quote: | I think it's likely that the number of points people will need to become residents will be lower than many currently believe, (provided they are not from India and China.) I single out these countries because, aside from the British, they have provided NZ with the bulk of its migrants in the last couple of years.
The fact is that, under the old system, applicants from all countries were treated more or less equally. Under the new system applicants from China, India and many other countries will not gain any points for work experience unless they already have a job offer in New Zealand. This means that NZ will almost certainly accept considerably fewer migrants from these countries than in previous years. (I will leave it to others who wish to debate the rights and wrongs of this to start a thread discussing it.)
NZ still wants large numbers of immigrants. Two of the main source countries of migrants have been 'frozen out'. What I believe this may mean is that anyone from the list of countries below who could have got enough points (or slightly too few points) under the old system without a job offer will probably still be able to gain residence without a job offer under the new system. It may be that scores very close to 100 will be successful. Time will tell.................................etc,etc |

it's good to know that the NZIS are onto this issue. |
