Hi, does anyone know the regulations on buying a motel, and what size would you need to make a living?
I am an electrical engineer in a brewery, with 30 years experience, my wife has qualifications in horticulture and caring. We have just come back from a stay in NZ and really fell in love with it, what a wonderful country, and lifestyle.
We have friends over there in Palmerston North, who have been there since 1972 and have made a great life for themselves, we would love to emigrate.
We were thinking about the option of buying a motel and making a go of that, and with the fallback of finding work as an engineer.
Is it possible to gain entry to run a business, if you have no real business experience, apart from being a landlord for several years?
A lot of questions I know, but we have more!
Keith. Confused

We are LTBV specialists

Try looking here. Jamie quite often contributes to this form, and has a pretty good idea of whats going on.

Although I'm not expert on the Business Visa side of things, I don't think you are allowed to just buy and take over an NZ business any more. I think you have to have run a similar business in your home country, and can prove that you could be able to hire a certain number of NZ-ers.

We visited NZ a year ago, and stayed in loads of motels...it seemed that most of them were run by Brits who had moved over some years ago!!However I think this is now longer possible

Correct.

NZIS require previous industry experience and business ownership history.

Without biz control evidence, you'll struggle to meet LTBv policy.

Thank you all for the quick replies, looks like I will have to look at plan number 2 then, try to get in by the engineering route.

This really is a very useful and informative web site.

Thanks again Keith.
