Hi Chris,
That is so scary what happened at Burger King.Thank goodness you left when you did!I guess I am pretty paranoid about crime.Probably from watching the news too much, which like you said it paints a bleak picture of things here.
This crime is one of my reasons for wanting to leave as well as looking for a slower paced lifestyle.I am very laid back and would like to live where things are a bit more calm.

Hopefully we will all get there one day!

Michelle,

somebody posted (it might have been you) that the American IQ dropped 100 points after 9/11.

Here is an indication that it is true......My friend originally from NYC and now lives in Florida who looked after our home in Florida went out and bought yet another gun after 9/11..... to make himself feel safer.....he already owns 3 guns Confused

So if he is on the 80th floor of a skyscraper and a Boeing 767 is inbound at 450 mph, he thinks he will be able to change the situation No

Only 2,800 people died on 9/11 Sad ........ yet 12,000 US citizens murder each other every year with guns ........ Think G Dubbya would consider a war on guns Confused

And later, he also sent me an email indicating that he would destroy any mail that came to his home which did not bear an origin of the sender....... because he feared it might contain anthrax from terrorists.

Luckily, when I was there at Christmas, I was able, only twice, to find the BBC World News on TV among the couple of hundred channels of hype and drudgery, and was able to assertain that the end of the world, imminent armageddon, and everyone dying from BSE that was being broadcast, was not actually going to happen in the next few hours Razz

Hi Chris,
No it wasn't me that posted about the IQ drop, but I agree with it in some cases.Don't even get me started on guns.I am so against them. When I was 12 my next door neighbor and good friend who was 13 had his head blown off by another one of the of our neighbor kids after playing with the fathers gun which by the way was locked up and the bullets were also locked up seperatley. That was a big wake up call to my 12 year old self about the dangers of guns. Not to mention all the sensless murders everyday.

G Dubbya loves guns,no war on guns while he's around and frankly the NRA is such a power here that I don't think there will ever be any strict gun control laws.Same with the Hmo's,they have a huge amount of power and I don't think there will ever be a national healthcare system in the US.

From what i've heard New Zealand has much stricter gun laws and that makes me very happy!!

Michelle,

I just remembered. When we first bought our vacation home we had a nice couple over there who were going to look after it. Anyways, her dad was staying over one weekend and he got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Her husband, disturbed from his sleep and half awake went to 'investigate' the noise he heard and promptly shot his father in law to death No

Hi Daisy,

We moved to Taradale 2 weeks ago after arriving 7 weeks ago. We love it here and the climate is wonderful . All the schools seem excellent and we have opted for Puketapu for our 3 boys. We also have a 2 1/2 year old girl.

Maybe we'll run in to each other one of these days...either at New World, the park or the $2 shop....my boys are addicts!

Hi Wendy. There's a few of us 'expat' ladies having a meal out in Taradale this week. send me a private message if you're interested in joining us and having a reminisce about home - we had a great laugh last time - none of us knew each other before and there's at least one other new person this time. I think there'll be about 6 of us. 3 of them have only been here since xmas. Anyway, let me know if you're interested and I can get in touch. Cheers.

having read this post from the start I was starting to get really fed up, then I read the last one which is such a good example of the normal, sane and caring side of us humans that it's left me feeling quite refreshed. take care all of you.
