Does anyone know rules about spouses going out to work, if they are not holder of work visa. We are hoping to go on long term business visa, but this as I understand it, would be in my name only. My wife would like to carry on working in geriatric nursing. |

Hi Timbo
I know if one of you has a work visa that your spouse automatically qualifies for an open work visa, although I'm not sure of the position with LTBV I'm afraid, you would imagine it may be similar in terms of your spouse being able to work.
As nurses are on the POL, I imagine she would have very little difficulty getting a job/work visa in any event. |

PS
Might be worth your wife applying to the NZ nursing council for registration before you go, they usually want transcripts of your training etc and its easier from the UK.

Thanks for that Shellie. I should have been more specific and said that my wife is not a trained nurse, more of an experienced care giver to the elderly. She does currently work for one of the big players, Bupa, and is undergoing training to NVQ but I dont think that would carry much weight with NZIS. From what we have been told, people in her line are quite sought after in some areas, but also low paid. I would be interested to hear any views on this one.

Hi Tim
I'm sure she will have no problems finding work, as in this country there is a desperate shortage of people with these skills. The wages will be lower especially converting them at the present exchange rates, I have tended to go by wages a third lower matched by the cost of living.
I work at BUPA in Leeds on their nurse bank, they are good at putting us on training courses and giving us the skills, although not always the staff, to do the job. The nurse patient ratio seems much better over there although it is 9 years since we were last there. I took a career break from flying and nursed full time in NZ.
Not sure where you are heading but if its Auckland or Wellington I have a few names that might be able to help you, send me a PM if you want any more info.

Thanks Karl. I just had email from another expat. who is not on forum, telling me that his wife was automatically issued work permit when he got his LTBV. So that nails it really.
Have you really role swapped? We dont have kids (grown up now), so I would probably get bored if we did it.

Yes we really have role swapped, the missus has a PhD in biochem and NZ is full of pharmaceutical companies begging for her! I'm a Chartered Envionmental Chemist (PgD, MSc, CChem MRSC) and yes it is a bit weird not bringing home the bacon but it has other rewards!!! back to work next year if our plan works out!!
