Have not moved to nz yet but when the wife and i do we are thinking about looking into car rental just incase we dont buy a car straight away.

Not after any thing special/flashy and the prize has got to be right as its me who will be me only one with a job to start off with.

The area we are hoping to move to is Christchurch.

So does anyone know off any good car rentals ?

Thanks..

Hi
We used National Car Rentals in Christchurch when we arrived and they where very good Nice One . They are actually based in the middle of the city but some one came and met us off the flight and took us to their rental place. The person who I was dealing with was Sonya Treacy and can be contacted on this email address; sonya@nationalcar.co.nz I'm not sure how much they charge for car hire as we had a relocation car to take to Dunedin and it didn't cost a thing, I must of been mad a 5hr drive after a 28 hr flight!! Nutcase

Good luck

There are so many rental firms here in Ch Ch that you would be nuts to book in advance unless you need something with more than 5 seats. Most of the cheaper car rental places don't advertise much and you can find rentals offered for less than half the big firm prices.

Decent cars start at around $2000 for something old but in good condition from a dealer and from $1000 for private sales. You may want to bear this in mind before commiting to a rental which may well cost you more. Insurance here is not compulsory as you are not liable for personal injuries to others, although you would be liable for any other damage caused. I had no problem arranging insurance on the phone in 10 minutes, with a big refund when I provided proof of no-claims bonus.

A colleague who came here for 5 months bought a car on a buy-back deal that cost him a lot less than renting for the time. I think it set him back about $1500 for 5 months and you would be hard pressed indeed to rent for that much.

Hi Obe,

I use www.qualityrental.co.nz
They give me a rate of $200 a week for a med car, unlimited kms' and insurance. Free pickup/drop off. (min 2 weeks)

Tell them Nicola sent you....if you do decide to go with them.

Like Robert says, you dont need to book,(just rock up to somewhere..chch has about 2 million 546 car rentals...) although if it is a 'deal' price (ie a negotiated one before you arrive with someone,) I would book

If you want me to do it, you dont need to give them your card to confirm it, they will hold it for you...as I use them alot and he knows where I live!!.
Otherwise, if you book somewhere you will have to hand over your credit card # to confirm the booking,
yell if you need help

I just checked his website...and his winter rates are cheaper than what he is charging me!! (that $200 was for the summer...when they are about $38 a day 11-14 days) I am going to have to have a word with him about lowering his prices for me in the winter!!!!

Cheaper for you to go direct to him....ask for an up grade at the same price as a medium...His name is Suren and he is a very nice Indian man...and I am sure he will for you.
Good luck
Nicola
