Thanks in advance to any and all who might reply to this post!
My husband of 2+ years is a native New Zealander. In his early 20s, he migrated to Australia and became a citizen. Now in his early 50s, he has lived with me here in the US since our marriage.
For various reasons, we hope to move within the year to New Zealand. We believe that due to his having been born in NZ and his Australian citizenship, he can simply climb on a plane and return to NZ as a permanent resident. If this is an incorrect assumption, we'd really appreciate getting set straight. Also, am I correct in understanding that I can enter the country as a permanent resident because I am his partner? If so, do I need a visa of some sort prior to our leaving?
It's all so confusing! We would be most grateful for any enlightenment.
Thanks again, Rae |

Hi Rae,
First and foremost, welcome to this forum.
About your case, I know for sure that Australian citizens are exempted from securing residence permit in NZ. I'm not sure how it goes for the spouse who is of another citizenship.

If you wish to migrate to New Zealand, you need to apply to the New Zealand Immigration Service for resident status.
Resident status in New Zealand entitles you to live, study and work indefinitely in New Zealand.
However, certain people do not need to apply for residence to live in New Zealand. They include:
- New Zealand citizens, who must show valid New Zealand passports on entering New Zealand; and
- Australian citizens, who must show valid Australian passports on entering New Zealand; and
- Australian permanent residents, who must show valid Australian resident return visas on entering New Zealand.
Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents must be of good character...... |
You can read more about it in this link - http://www.immigration.govt.nz/Migrate/#Residence+in+New+Zealand[/quote] |

Hi, Jenkins,
Thanks so very much for your kind reply! And the warm welcome, too.
I will explore the link you provided and see if I can sort it out. Having gone through the immigration process bringing Stephen (aforementioned husband) into the U.S. without assistance of attorneys or agents, I am reasonably confident we can navigate this process as well. The first thing we learned then was that the support and input from others is always invaluable!
Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. It is much appreciated.
