Hi,
I'm hearing that there is a shortage of skilled labour in the construction industry in NZ.
Is there one particular field that NZ is in greater need of and is this shortage likely to be an on going thing ?
The areas that I'm looking at are either joiner/carpenter ... Electrician or plumbing and heating
I'm currently considering retraining as part of my long term plan to relocate to New Zealand.
any advice from people in the know would be grately appreciated
thanks |

I'm not sure about specific shortages, but when looking in to things I could do to get to NZ quickly, I looked in to electrician/plumber area as i'm quite good at it! My understanding was, you needed to have completed an apprenticeship in your chosen area to be accepted under the Priority Occupations List. The only downside to this is you wont be able to claim any points for relevant work experience in this area if you haven't done it before! Swings and roundabouts it would seem!
After all my looking, I chose a degree in my field of IT, so I could claim for the relevent work experience too.
All depends on your circumstances I guess, maybe you could do an apprenticeship and then get a 2yr work visa in that field, could work out nicely!
