Does anybody know if you can convert a visit visa to a general work visa? Can you apply for a GWV whilst on a visit visa?
Dave has a job offer but doesn't want to hang around waiting to apply for a GWV. How long does it take to process a GWV from the UK? Questions, questions!!
Look forward to your replies.

Hi Sandra (and Dave) and Welcome.
Provided you have a job offer that is either on the Priority Occupations List or the offer has been cleared with the NZIS that no suitable New Zealanders are available for it a visitors visa can be converted into a work permit.

I think you'll find the link below really useful. I think it should answer the questions you've asked (and possibly one or two others you haven't got around to asking yet).

Thanks for your reply JCM.
We have so many issues to think about it would be good if somebody who has actually gone through the process of just turning up on a visit visa could reassure us. Haven't really seen any posts on the same sort of theme - some say go and don't worry about it - some say be careful.
The main problem we have is that Dave is now 60 so we couldn't go through applying for residency channels - over the age limit.
He has a job offer which he wants to take up in just over 3 weeks time. We haven't even received the police certificate form yet - they said they would post it. I think we really need that.
His occupation, structural design engineer, is on the OSL but not for Manawatu - the job is in Palmerston North. Does this make a difference? Would the documentation Dave needs to provide in PN be the same as if applying in the UK? Do you think his age will make a big difference?
His prospective employer went to NZIS and were advised that he should apply from the UK - but he just wants to get out there - there's no holding him back. Also, is it true that you get a much shorter time on the visa than if applying in the UK?
Is there anybody out there who had similar problems? Help.
