I am not going to go into specifics just want to say though that chatting to other travellers that it seems very much to depend on where you come from.. someone from canada was lamenting how expensive it all is here but to us from Essex it seem reasonable, although certainly dearer that it was 2 years ago. whether this is because of the exchange rate perception thing or it really is I can't be sure. But I think that most of you who want to be here for a quieter lifestyle will just absorb those type of differences if its what you really want to do. If economics is your main reason for coming it might not be such a good bet. and although it has gone up property is still much cheaper that the south east of England. Clapping

I think the more quiet lifestyle may be more absorbable for a lot of us, but can't help adding that coming from southern California, anything's gotta be less expensive! Surely there are starter homes for less than half a million! LOL

Mad isn't it - my tiny 1 bedroom flat here on the coast in SE England would sell for equivalent of NZ$350,000 !! Eek And you couldn't even get a herd of sheep in it!

And renting it out when we are in NZ will bring in equiv of NZ$1,500 per month.

So before you ditch your property investigate renting it out - even for short periods.

Nice One

If you put £350 000 in a savings account at 6.5% (easy to get that rate here ona secure bind) you would get £1850 per month and none of the hassle of renting. No capital accumulation either though....
