Hello all,
Been on the MAF site and have spoken to people who've been to NZ several times on various visas. One alludes to one thing and one says another...
Having read the sites it looks as if all my outdoors kit is best left behind due to the (rightfully) stringent environmental protection measures. Whilst you can only agree with such measures I'm buggered if I'm parting with my tramping boots! I will pay to have them fumigated if need be, but this is where I'm confused.
I know people who've been there and imported containers and all they needed to do was high-pressure wash all items on the hit-list, including lawnmowers, etc. They say leave nothing behind because if it's clean, it'll be fine and won't be confiscated.
Can anyone who's imported containers please clarify, or shed a little more light on this for me please? Any tramper knows how long it takes to get the perfect boots, let alone the perfect everything else...and then there's the family camping gear...
A good half of our reason for making the move is to get amongst it in real wilderness, someone please tell me I won't spend my first three years trying to replace my lovely Berghaus/Lowe Alpine/Mamut wardrobe! |

Hi
From reading other posts on this subject, I believe all you have to do is scrub everything that you want to take until it is spotlessly clean and throw on a good measure of disinfectant. So your boots shouldn't be a problem.
Karl posted something on this - he is the expert. He said just the smell of the disinfectant lingering on things is a big plus.

| Can someone tell me what type of disinffectant or fumigant I should use (something I can find in the US) for packing up our goods before they go in a container. Thanks! |

Thanks Sandra, what a relief! Just the thought had me reeling...
I'll try and find Karl's post on the subject and I'll try and get an email address for MAF and ask them which disinfectant type they prefer...the thought of stinking up the great outdoors with Dettol brings a wry one...
Thanks again Sandra and if I find anything Junnifer, I'll pass it on.
Regards, C. |

Hi Sandra,
An hour ago ? God, I'm so jealous, what a feeling that must be...
I just said to my wife we might try and economise and just scent everything with a Harpic Loo block
All the best, C. |
