I would like to hear from somebody who got a job through www.NewJobZ.co.nz agency. Any experience will be helpful.

good question ......

we have their info material right here ..... and are thinking about using them to write a cv (geared for nz) for my husband - would cost the same as having it done here. they aren't very straighforward about their pricing system and various fees though from what i can tell (and i have emailed them repeatedly) - and i am cautious with some red lights flashing internally only because i feel like they are offering a menu with tasty dishes and NO prices listed ....somewhere i read that they travel ALL over nz speaking to potential employers.... well, that can cost alot ....

i think we'll pay for the 'first level' (you can 'quit' any time) just to get the tailored to nz cv - and then go on our own. we feel capable of finding IT companies on line and emailing them the cv .....

I'd be interested to hear of peoples experiences with this company too.

We have been warned off using any type of relocation agency as most things are easily done yourself for a fraction of the cost.

Hmmm

....caution is advised!

Is there anybody already in NZ that has experience of how kiwi's prefer CV's that can advise us all. Save us all a few $. I could do with updating mine, not that I plan on getting a job, but just so that it is there on the PC when I need it.

we actually have a little booklet from newjobz on resumes: it covers the basics and then says to be sure to omit the deadly dozen:

height, weight, health, sex, marital status, number of children, religion, ethnic origin, date of birth/age, photographs, reasons for leaving previous jobs, salary expectations/history. (potentially discriminatory info, either intentionally or even unintentionally by employer)

the four keys to effective preparation are:

target a position you are qualified for. highlight important info. be specific (blunt). be correct in your grammar and spelling.

also, they say to address the cover letter to the person with the ability to hire you (never 'to whom it may concern').
be brief with it - roughly 200 words.
don't start too many paragraphs with 'i'
refer to resume, but do not repeat contents.
take initiative at end of letter - tell them when you'll call
or send follow up ...
sign your letter legibly in black ink.

newjobz say they see thousand of resumes on a regular basis and that 70% of them are potential employer turnoffs. they offer their resume writing service for under US 300.-

we personally need a third person to do my husbands resume.... Yes

i figure it's one of the greatest investments we can make at this time.
we're still not sure who it'll be though.....

Smile

300US isn't too bad! Especially when you can spend hours re-writingthe damn things! Plus I didn't know about the "deadly dozen" - v. interesting!

If you are interested in seeing a NZ CV this has a couple of examples and pointers. The WINZ site has very basic advice.

Hi,
I have met Keith Lightfoot in person one afternoon last year for an hour chat. (he started the agency, not sure if he is still there)

had a friend interested in work...was sussing him out... He was charging $70 US for a package (cd of nz, some basic info) ..if you dont want to proceed, you get it back, then another $300us then if you proceed further (CV) , $7000 US to get a job OFFER, then a % (I think it was about 17% ish) of your wages could be more...cant remember each week for a YEAR to re coup all the 70, and 300 and 7000 bucks they have to give back to those who pull out/ are unemployable.
No job no fee, they give it 3 mths and after that if no one wants you they refund your 7000.

He was finding jobs for acc people (those who got injured at work..needed to return or benefit cut etc) and I dont think the job you get will be a suregeon if you were a surgeon in say India, it might just be a cleaner...but he says, hey it is a job and gets you in to the country blah blah....

AND....wait it gets better!

When I heard $7000 US (which at the time was $14000.00 nz dollars here due to the exchange, I went...how can you charge that much?) "I am not ashamed of my prices"

plus....a friend of mine ( a chef and a mental health nurse...I know? how do you get into both those fields ...) he ended up writing a few CV's for Keith, as he was out of work (no nurses needed to cook at the institution at the time!) and did a few for him...then got 'laid off' as Keith felt they could keep the costs down by doing it within the company (rather than outside CV writers)

If you want him to take a look at yours email me at my free.net addy and I can pass it on to him...I will ask him first though....as finally after 8 mths he got a part time job signing for the deaf....the guy is just ozzing talent huh!!??
(from Redditch...need I say more...!) and he might think it is a bit of a cheek if I in undate him with people's cv's....but I recon he should do it for a couple bucks, if it helps people with what NZ employers are looking for, he is then not being used,(as he is getting some dosh for his time...$50 or whatever) and you get a cheaper service than $600 nz/$300 US....I must tell him to look into that.....anyway, if you do, just yell...he might just say YES!!

If you want my advice....stop reading if you dont,

fly out here with your $7000 us (not even nz bucks...us dollars he wants...how greedy is that!?) stay 2 weeks, blitz everywhere, get the job offer...go to Auckland or Wellington or wherever and get the stamp...go home, pack the family up...ARRIVE..sorted! easy! Nutcase
