Import duty will depend to some extent upon the value of the shipment. You should be charged if over the personal improt limit but this varies. The limits are different for some items, as are rates of duty. Where you import from is also an issue.

Does anyone know specifically why books are so expensive- and magazines as well!!! I saw that Vanity Fair, which is $12 for a yearly subscription in the US, is $337NZ for a yearly!!

Is it all due to importation costs?

Look into online subscriptions. Some magazines offer their complete content online (plus an archive) for about the cost of a normal (not international) subscription. Cooks Illustrated, thank goodness, is one of them! I haven't checked with them for their NZ price. The Economist is US$129 in the US, but NZ$321 for NZ subscriptions. Eeek! I'll be switching to the online-only version (US$89) when we emigrate.

A company called Zinio.com offers digitized versions of various publications. One of the free samples you can download is an issue of National Geographic Traveler that features New Zealand - talk about serendipity! Nice One
