|
|
| We do not have residency yet and will enter NZ on student visas. As non-residents, we understand that we will have to pay duty & GST on everything we import, including used clothing, household effects, the truck, and even our pets! With the exception of the truck (we have a good understanding of what that will cost to bring in) we have no idea how much we will have to pay and how much depreciation will be taken into account. If anyone been through this process (importing as a non-resident), please clue us in on what to expect! Thanks. |

| We came in on LTWV (2 years) and we imported our personal effects with no problem, no duty, no GST. I am aware that Customs can require you pay a bond equivalent to the duty + GST chargeable but if you become a PR you can claim this back! I should check out the NZ customs website or fire off an email for clarification. |

Thanks Karl for sharing your experience. I have checked the customs web site but it suggests that we DO have to pay duty & GST. I will send an email as you suggested.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone else who has gone through w/o residency.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be a moot point with the selection point moving ever lower!! |

Hi again
Didn't realise you had bought a house but were not actually living there yet.
I've read my info from shipping agents and they say.
| Quote: | 'First time migrants and NZ residents returning to resume permanent residence after more than 21 months abroad are permitted to import household goods and other effects (excluding motor vehicles, aircraft and some types of boat) free of duty and sales tax for a reasonable time after arrival (?) provided the following requirements are met:
they are coming to NZ with the intention of taking up permanent residence and
they have lived outside NZ for the whole of the 21 months before departing for NZ and
they have owned and used the goods for 21 months before departing for NZ and
the goods are for their own personal use.
No concessions are applicable to travellers on either Visitor's Visa or Work Visa for less than 12 months' |
I guess we are OK as Dave has 2 year work visa, although we still don't know about the permanent residence bit. |

We arrived on a work visa (2 years) and worried about this but they didn't bother us.
You have to fill out a form which includes your visa status but they either didn't care or were happy with the work visa.
I found the importing process much worse to think about than to do but it would do you no harm to phone customs here. I am sure you will find them very helpful and totally unlike most bureacracies elsewhere! |

| We have just come over on LTBV and have had no duty or GST on personal stuff. Is your truck diesel because the diesel here is apparently not up to the standards our vehicles are used to and can cause engine problems. |

| Thanks to both Robert and Veronica for your posts. Maybe we can get in after all without paying tax. That would be great! |
