Hi All,
Didnt notice this subject in the archives so here goes.
What is the standard over in NZ for the following
TV = PAL? NTSC? Different freqs also for terrestrial TV?
DVDs = Are they zoned? can we play nz purchased DVDs on our UK spec DVD Player?
PC = UK PCs work over there regarding Modems etc?
Radio = Bandwidth of FM stations the same as UK? (I notice the bandwidth in the USA is larger than the UK)
No doubt I have forgotten something else so please provide whatever info you have.
Cheers

Hey Carl,
From what I can gather from various sources:
Your PC should work fine in NZ, now worries, as they say.
DVDs are another matter. If you have a Multi-region DVD player you can take it to NZ and it will work wonders. However, if you have a Region 2 player (like me) then it will be no good with NZ DVDs, but will still work with Region 2 DVDs on the NZ power system. NZ is region 4, just so you know. Got it?
Telly can also be problematic. Apparently tellys in both NZ and the UK are PAL, but they are different versions (UK = PAL I, NZ = PAL B/G). If you take your UK telly to NZ it will pick up pictures but not sound. However, I did hear (possibly even on this site) that it is fixable if you are not willing to sacrafice a special telly.
With regards to PS2 games, I am not sure. I have had a little look on the internet for you, but I will have to get back to you later. I would have thought that they wouldn't work in NZ as they have similar regional restrictions to DVD's, I'm just not sure what the boundries are.
I hope at least some of that was helpful

The PS2 is ok for games but the region rules apply as to the DVD on it. They are region 2 if bought in the UK. There is a way around it but you have to know the right people I guess!
Most DVD players can be changed to multiregion, try scouring the internet for how to deregionalise it. It is very easy and you dont have to touch a single screw on it to do it. |

Hi - talkative today so please forgive repetition!
Your UK pal TV won't work here - the best solution (if you bring it) is to use a local VCR (from $100) as a tuner.
The good news is that your vcr (used as a player only), dvd and ps/2 will work normally with NZ TVs through the AV sockets (which bypass the tuner). NZ tvs don't tend to have scart sockets though)
I have a uk radio here which works fine.
The best news is that you don't need a new modem lead - BT standard phone jacks are the norm. If you are thinking of a new PC anyway, very serviceable ones can be bought here for $600 or less with pretty good machines for $999 |
