| I am looking into migrating to NZ, I qualified in the UK as an electrician with the City and Guilds in 1989 (parts 1,2 and 3, AM1 and 2 and NVQ3). I changed jobs in 1993, can anyone tell me how easy the registration is and whether I will be ok doing it after the break in career?/ Also, can I register from the UK or do I have to register in NZ?? |

Hi Nick
Here is the website with the necessary info
http://www.med.govt.nz/ewrb/
You need to get on the website mentioned above. Go to overseas section. Basically NZ recognises certain UK electrical qualifications (every spark here will have done some of them) this will lead you to being exempt from certain courses to gain registation. You will have to do a first aid course over in NZ to gain full licence.
You will not be able to get a registration and a practsing licience here this will be have to be completed in NZ
Hope this helps
Good luck

Hi,
If you want to do the safety part for the electricians registraton I recomend talking to Nick Chandler chandler@free.net.nz , he is coming over to the uk in December and will run the course (one day I think). I will probably be doing it also, so maybe see you there. After you have done this you can apply for a provisional licence but you will need a job offer (you can actually do a phone interview - they are desperate for sparkies). When you have your provisional you can then work supervised until you take two other test at college during the first year (stage 3 practical and regs). You can do this at the manukau.ac.nz university in Auckland. I am new to this also, so check everything I said..
Hope this helps |

Marky,
thanks for the advice. I will look into that. Are you working as a spark at present?
My only worry is that I qualified in 1989 and worked until 1993 as a spark, mainly domestic wiring. I then changed career for 8 years and have been in a new job for the last three years where I require a slight knowledge of electrics. I am looking at getting my 16th edition regs, inspection and testing and PAT testing over the next few months.
I am slightly worried that I may have "forgotten" most of thje stuff I learned at college and therefore may struggle in NZ.
Do you know anything about the jobs over there? I would be happier in a domestic electricians post?? (I am new to this also!)
Thanks
Nick |
