Hi,

I've been a self-employed / small business owner for the last 14 years, and am trying to decide if I need to go the skilled migrant, the work to residence or the entrepeneurial route.

Could anyone help me with the entrepeneur category ? The info on the NZIS web site is very scetchy.

Do you need a certain level of funds as you do with the Investor Category ?

It appears that you need to be self-employed in NZ for two years (how do you get a permit to do that ?)

Does your business have to be the same type as it was in the States?

What do they consider beneficial to NZ ??

thnx

Hi TG

I have no idea if you comply with SMC, but in terms of business migration you are looking at Long Term Business Visa for self employment, or if you have >$1mNZ, you might fit the Investor category depending on age etc.

LTBv is self employment visa for 3 years, and after 2 years you qualify to apply for residence as Entrepreneur - being in control of NZ business for 2 years.

The LTBV was designed to facilitate stepping to Entrepreneur, so they are linked. It is Work to Residence.

Policy requirements are that whatever business you establish or purchase will contribute to NZ by way of new jobs for kiwis, export markets, new products and services etc. So just buying and maintaining an existing business is not enough (unless total investment is $1m +/-)

NZIS expect that your NZ business would be close to the ones you have experiene in previously,a nd you need to show local knowledge, research etc, all wrapped up ina tidy business plan that meets NZIS requirements (these differ to general requirements from a VC firm or bank). Funds required have no minimum, just what the business requires plus a living allowance.

More info can be found at http://www.businessplans.co.nz/bizmigrant.htm, www.benz1.com and http://www.immigration.govt.nz/Migrate/Long+Term+Business+Visa+-+Permit.htm

If you are interested, you can PM me with your email and I'll send you a LTBV worksheet, we'll do a free asessment for you and and offer a general guide to the the way ahead.

NB we are not immigration agents.
