hi charley

yes i think it's a good idea to get in touch with people now so you already have things lined up when you arrive. i'm just finishing the applied maths msc at imperial college in london. i've been contacting people in NZ about phd study and there are a couple of potential projects i could work on (at waikato and auckland). getting the funding will be the bottom line though!

i have no idea if it'll come off but if i never tried i know i'd regret it. i'm looking forward to living in NZ, and if i can get paid to do maths over there, that would be a dream come true. but if it doesn't happen there are plenty of other jobs i could do. i'm just looking forward to the adventure Smile

whereabouts will you be heading initially?

hi Matt,
Maths.....ughhhh!!! I hated it at school and still avoid it like the plague (my expertise in communicable diseases keeps me at a safe distance)

I'm not as lucky as you - my dissertation is yet to be formally started. All the taught modules out the way nearly. I'm considering very seriously doing my dissertation in NZ.

We're heading for New Plymouth, thinking about January. My partner won't go anywhere else (a bit narrow minded i think as you need to go where jobs are) but like him i felt i left a part of myself there on my last visit and want to go back and find it. A lovely couple (Jack and May) took us in for dinner when we visited there and returning the favour is our first priority on arrival.

I'm going to ask my employer for 6 months unpaid leave in a couple of weeks (when i get back from scottish holiday and have had a good think!!) as who knows what the future holds. They can always say no and i was originally thinking of quitting anyway! I do love my job though! Confused

We've been thinking about this stuff for a year now and it won't go away. We can't sit and wonder for ever - as they say, life's not a dress rehearsal!!!

Getting paid for maths eh? Would need to be a lot of pay to inspire me. Give me a bit of social policy research anyday!!!!! Nice One

Charley
