Probably the best fish n'chips I've had here in the UK were up north in Whitby (or near Whitby). And in my limited experience of NZ it was at Manganoui, Northland. I remember seeing Tarahiki and Snapper on the menu and the Tarahiki was definitely my fave. Funnily enough almost every small-town fish and chip shop I saw in NZ declared itself the "best in the world"..! Also they always battered and fried the fish to order, while here in the UK the fish is often cooked then stored on a hot shelf so it's not as fresh. That's ok if you're hungry but it means the batter's a bit stale. What other kinds of fish do you get over there? I think I still prefer Haddock.
Hmm.. Not sure where I was going with this thread.. just daydreaming really.. Mmmm... chips..
Matt
ps - I eat apples and broccoli too |

Hi Matt. We had fush un chups quite a lot when we we visited Whitiangs on the Coromandel. Snapper Jacks was the best chippy in town, highly recommend it for the Gurnard. Yum Yum!!
Also, the wife got hooked (excuse pun) on deep fried scallops in batter. Not like what we get here, these things were about 20 >25 cm diam. and very good eating.
Carry on dreaming, I`m right there with ya. |

| Hey Bill. Have you seen a Kingi. They are superb looking fish and apparently fight like demons. They are definately built for speed, so they probably get very lean if you can call it that. Have not tasted it personally but have heard a few kiwis rave about it. I met an Ausi. rock fishing for them with live baits big enough for a meal for two. |

Hi Tim,
Never seen a live one, but the one we were eating fed 8 adults and there was still 1/2 of it left at the end of the evening! Tasted more like chicken than fish. Will definately sample it when in NZ again.

Yummmmm huge scallops - it's on my list now
By the way, the best fish and chips were definitely to be found in Anstruther in Fife in my opinion - voted best in Scotland and definitely best we have found! Bit of a long trip unless you are local tho! |

Can't resist a topic about chips.
Anybody else seen Nuhaka Chippie, on the road from Gisborne to Wairoa, it's little more than a shed and provides Battered Green Lip Mussels to die for. It's even been articled in a national newspaper here!!
Opening times are a bit limited, but there lies a successful business.
As for local fish you have to love the Terakihi, because just saying the word makes you smile. |
