Have just read that large areas of BOP are being evacuated due to floods. One poor woman had her house washed away completely. Just to make things worse, an earthquake has hit the same region. My heart is with anone suffering that lot. |

Palmerston North suffered from severe floods last year. The pictures were on the PN web site for a while - not sure if they still are.
Dave has assured me the new house in Feilding is not in a flood area and wasn't affected last year |

I don't think there is such a thing as flood insurance in NZ (like I know they are moving towards in UK). So look up an insrance company website like NZI or State Insurance, and you should get a feel for the cost of insurance (which is low relatively speaking).
Cheers,

I am not sure in all of the U.S, but in california it is mandatory. When you buy a house the lender pulls out a map, and if it says you are in a flood zone, that it you have to go buy it.
It not that uncommon, although odd because it never rains on Southern California. IF we get more than two inches in two days. The media sends all the anchhor people out in rain slicks to cover,"STORM WATCH 2004."
They will flash to a picture of a gutter filled with water then through you to the teaser guy, who uselly says something like this........
"Hello everone this is Chuck Henry, with storm watch 2004, lets go live to Diane on the 5 freeway overpass." "What the latest Diane."
"Hi chuck well we have received over a 1/4 of an inch in the last hour!!!!!!!!." "If you don't need to be on the road right now,I'd stay Home."
It's great when buisness is slow they love to go to the STORM WATCH.
Can anyone do an impression of a Kiwi weatherman? Do they have a
LIVE in COPTER FIVE Guy. Ours always seem to have a handlebar mustache. |

Hi Dave & Sandra-- Are you in Fielding? I just visited Palmerston, Fielding, Ashurst, etc., and loved it. Ended up buying a house in Palmerston North, in Riverdale area. Heard that Fielding did get hit with the floods though. Maybe I got bad info. How are you liking the area? I would have preferred to live in Fielding, esp. as housing prices are cheaper, but I needed to be close to Massey. |

Hi
Dave is in the process of buying a house in Feilding. You have to remember they spell it a funny way. Should all be signed, sealed and delivered by 27th August. He did something that we had agreed he wouldn't do and fell in love with a house when he was supposed to be looking for somewhere else to rent that would accept the cat. He tells me that the house is in a higher part of town and shouldn't have any problems with flooding He is living and working in Palmy at the moment though. He works on Rangitikei Street.
I am still in the UK at the moment waiting for our house sale to go through. Dave gave the solicitor power of attorney to sign on his behalf . We've been apart nearly 3 months now . I waited a month before putting the house on the market just in case he hated his job and NZ. But everything is wonderful as far as he is concerned.
How are you finding Palmy as a place to live - he went for Feilding because of the lower prices and only 10 minutes drive to PN. How long have you been there now and how does it compare to where you came from. Does it live up to expectations? There appears to be everything there that you would need for a pleasant life-style. I only wandered around for an afternoon while Dave was having his interview so only have brief memories of the place and we didn't visit Feilding.
Are you studying at the Uni? It would be nice to hear somebody else's views on the area if you can spare the time. |

Hi Sandra,
I spent about a week in Palmy in June/July 2004 and found it to be quite pleasant. It has aspects of a small country town as well as a bigger city. Good points are the numerous shops, restaurants, and cafes, the nice people, proximity to an airport, the university/colleges, and a great wine tasting club (to which I was invited my first night there!). Bad points are that the city itself is not very picturesque, there can be a lot of rush hour traffic in town (by NZ standards anyway), and the city is having an identity crisis-- its not sure whether it wants to be a modern city or a quaint town.
Feilding was a lot more attractive to me from the perspective that its "old town" feel is much more apparent, it is smaller than Palmy, housing prices are cheaper, and it is more in the country/hills than Palmy (which is in the flat valley). However, even though Feilding is only a 10 min drive to Palmy, during bad weather or bad traffic, that could stretch to 25 mins or more to get to Massey, or worse, I would not be able to get there at all (floods). In addition, I was concerned about being able to sell quickly if need be as well as making sure I am not out in hicksville all by myself-- in case my hubby is working overseas. So, on balance, we decided to buy in Palmy. It was a hard choice though. I liked Ashurst as well, although it seemed a little too small and a litte abandoned (unlike Feilding).
Yes, I am going to be a student at Massey, so we plan to go in on a student visa if not selected before Jan. 2005. However, if I could get a job, I would go now and work at the job instead to obtain residency. I am a lawyer though, and legal jobs are hard to come by for non-residents.
Well good luck to you, and please keep in touch and let me know how things are going with you. By the way, I too am bringing in my pets (4 of them) so I know what you are going through with your cat.
