Hi all
Having found genuine colman's mustard in Australia (the kiwi version of the same name is not quite as hot) I thought to bring some back with me but was put off by the possibility of having it siezed by customs.
I enquired of MAF on my return and it appears that you can actually bring most foods in with you as long as you declare them.
Particular exceptions are seeds (which must be in factory sealed packs with the latin name and will be opened for inspection), plants including cuttings and some fruit. Almost all supermarket food other than fruit can be freely imported.
There is also a handy ruse that although you can only bring in 1125ml of spirits duty free, they don't collect duty if it is less than $50. This means you can bring in 3 bottles each as long as it is declared. Duty free spirits are about half the shop price and the rest 20% cheaper (if that)
Having something to declare will also get you through customs at Auckland a lot faster (christchurch it makes no difference as there is no separate queue) |
