Beginning to think about emigrating from Berkeley, CA to NZ to be in a freer and more tolerant society than is taking form here in the USA. Are there any locations within NZ that gay people are more likely to choose to live?

Not being gay and not living in NZ I can't be too specific Smile , but when my brother and sis in law were over in Auckland last year they had a few gay friends whose opinion was that most cities were in general very tolerant of gay relationships. They would go out as a group, gay couples and straight couples and nobody gave them any trouble or strange looks.

We visited Dunedin last December and had a chance to go to a mixed gay/straight bar for a Christmas party. Everyone was quite friendly and we had an ejoyable time. There were a few mixed bars in the city; I would guess as a university town it would be a bit more progressive than say other parts of the South Island. I am not sure what it might be like for daily life but the people we spoke with (mostly lesbians) said that they thought Dunedin was a great place to live. We also stayed at a gay B&B in Wellington (great view of the harbour) and did not get the impression that life for gays there would be any more difficult than say a small US city. Hope this helps! Most people won't really care whether you're gay or not. Someone very close to me is gay and neither her nor her partner seem to have any problems. Auckland, being the biggest city, has quite a few gay and mixed clubs, especially around the K rd area.

You could try the tiny farming community of Caterton (lower Nth Island)... they elected the world's first transsexual member of parliament!!
