Hi Moorf
Governor's Bay is placed at the Western end of Lyttelton Harbour on Banks Peninsula. Beautiful location with quite a lot of decent looking houses. It's fairly small with 2 'hotels' ok pubs as far as I remember. The commute into Christchurch is over Dyers Pass, fairly steep, which an estate agent told us takes 20 mins to the CBD - in rush hour probably a fair bit more.
A good website is www.bankspeninsula.com - if you go into Council Information then GIS mapping you can zoom in to the area and get aerial photos of individual properties etc if you've found a house you like. A Pom in Governors Bay has published loads of great photos etc about his move and the harbour on www.kiwikat.com .
Hope this is useful.
Cheers, John. |

20 minutes my left cheek.....(where!!!??)
it is 20 mins to get up and over the hill...let alone then driving into the city.....I would double that (or more if you get stuck behind a truck as no passing lanes..the road isnt that wide!)
It is a beautiful area...and great if you could have a weekender there and an apartment in town during the week...the hill might start to get on your nerves after about 3 weeks of daily commuting.....(governors bay is in the volacon..chch is the otherside of the volcano.....cool huh!)
just my opinion though..and I was wrong once!
Nic
ps Helen, if changing your tickets to fly into chch instead of Auckland will cost you 50 quid each or whatever..DO IT. The hassle of landing in auckland and then waiting to get your bags....customs ...sniffer dogs etc..and then getting on a bus to get to the domestic terminal where you find your flight is delayed/cancelled due to fog or whatever...is not FUN!!!
Then flying to wellington for a 40 min stop and then getting into chch (unless you are on a jet which will fly direct) absolutely AWAKE....is just the best experience ever!!!
It will be soooo worth the money to fly here direct..trust me I am a doctor

Nic to the rescuuuue again
I double-checked JT's commute time with someone from a B&B in Governors Bay (cheeky huh ) and they confirmed that 40 mins (20 to get over hill, 20 to get into CBD) was more realistic with a little longer in bad weather... so that's something for us to consider and we shall do that commute when we get there to check it out!
(Commute from Sumner Nic?)
Bad news re changing tickets - our ticket means we have to fly into Auckland and it CANNOT be changed.... oh well, perhaps we'll knock on Michelle's door for some caffeine and a mattress |

Sumner if you go down Linwood ave and NOT ferry road...into town maybe 20 mins (I am not up at that time of the morning! I dont 'do' work remember!) maybe a bit longer with traffic (ferry road is a 40 min journey)
at non peak hours it will take 11 mins....
Huntsbury hill, cashmere...10 mins...
BUT to be honest I dont do the run in the morning...we live near QE2 and it is about 15 mins peak..12 non!
When you get here..get your stop watch and just do it, and then we can have a word doc with all the times on (I think there was one in a thread a while back)
sorry about the auck deal...anyone else though coming to chch...even though it is a 40 min flight down..FORGET IT!! 60 kg each of luggage....smashed out of your minds..the last thing you want to do..pay the extra and fly into chch

John, slap on the wrists!!
Real estate agents will tell you what you want to hear...
yes, this home is heated...NOT! yes this home faces south and gets winter sun (remember it has to face NORTH here for that!!) yes, this asbestos roof is fine..NOT! and this contaminated soil (big at the moment) just means you cant eat your veges, but you can grow them!!
welcome to the forum though John...you did good!
