I am not a big fan of gun ownership, but not against hunting either. I understand the hunting scene is very big in NZ and a lot of people hunt for the table so to speak. This led me to wonder about gun ownership rules. Is there a licence system in place or is it a general free for all?

| Thanks Tanya. That puts my mind at rest a bit. I must say, I have not seen anything in the nz national news with regard to gun crime, so assume it is not a major problem. Then again, it was not a major problem here 10 > 15 years ago. |

Saw an article yesterday on Stuff.co.nz where some deranged guy in Dunedin attacked people in 5 different houses with an axe and knives (people were all known to him)... most managed to escape their homes before he did them any real harm... all I could think was, lucky he didn't have a gun!!
Still. How strange!! - Rae |

Hi
8% of the population (210,000) hold a firearms licence.
http://www.pha.org.nz/phadocs/Gun%20control%2002%20FINAL.doc - Policy on Gun Control - to be reviewed July 2005.
If you don't want to know actual deaths per year then don't click the link! - You did - didn't you
