Hi Lor
You don't hear too much about Hamilton here. It's really a great place as far as my wife and I are concerned. Like Goldilocks said...it's not too big, but not too small either...it's just right.
We stayed there for a few days last year and really enjoyed ourselves. There are a ton of good restaurants. They have their own rugby team, plenty of pubs, gardens, museums, shops, a nice riverboat and the place is extraordinarily clean!
We looked at some properties and found everything from small flats for $160K NZD to very nice houses for more than $1MM+ NZD.
There are a fair amount of students attending the university and that lends itself to a little bit of "hipness", but nothing like Wellington...which was fine with us.
As far as rents...like buying, you can pretty much have anything you want...depending on how much you want to spend. Here's a great site that lists rents throughout NZ:
http://www.minhousing.govt.nz/tenancy/Market-Rent/market%20rent%20region.asp
Hamilton is in the Waikato (read: breathtaking river) area.
In any case, we found it a very pretty and friendly place. It's within an hour's drive of Auckland. They're completing a four to six lane highway in between so a lot of folks that work in South AKL live in just north of Hamilton. But it's far enough away from the "big city" to be considered "rural". The ocean is within easy reach as well as other areas inland.
It gets fairly cool in the winter...by North Island standards anyway, but overall, pretty nice. We'd recommend having a look!
Hope that helps a bit! |

Cool winter - not compared with Lancashire. :chilly:
Hamilton in mid-winter has average daily max of 14 C and min of 4 C. |
